I have a gun that I would like to paint with DuraCoat most likely but it has a blued finish. Would I be able to paint over it? What kind of prepping would need to be done? I assume I would need to rough it up some. Thanks for any help.

To get the optimum covering you're going to need to blast the bluing off and then coat it.

Ya can't really coat over bluing effectively.

Joe (HERO GEAR) put a good coat of duracoat on my son's handi rifle. It's held up good for 3 years so far. We sanded down the barrel, reciever, and stocks proir to the duracoat. He put a camo pattern on the rifle and it really looks good.

I painted my mossberg 500 with a rustoleum textured paint. All that I did to prep it was wipe it down with acetone to get the oil off from my handling it. Then I taped off the areas that I didn't want to paint and then started painting. It has held up just fine.

Is this your P228 you're considering doing bkelm?

Oh no. I love that gun too much to paint it . Besides its stainless and not blued. I actually don't have it yet but I'm thinking of picking up a beat up used Mossy 500 on the cheap and refinishing the metal and the wood myself.

According to this site, they say to apply directly over bluing.

DuraCoat Firearm Finishes Quick Guide

But I don't buy that for a second. If you carefully sand the surface with 600 grit wet and dry to rough it up a bit and hit all the areas, you should be good.

That is what I did on a shotgun receiver and it worked beautifully. The finish, after applying some clear coat, came out just as I wanted it to and it is sticking like it was glue.

You do need to spray it on, no brushing allowed.
