this should come out of left field...

thought of this while thinking about how many tactics schools/workshops their are and why many are probably shooting-wise worth their relatively high price of admission (i'm sure many have had sticker shock... but the fact that you usually will be shooting scenarios and working on things you almost never would while punching holes in paper targets on a range, it's a rare opportunity and is arguably well worth it...).

while i'm not the best at it (yet), having not participated in that many or for very long thus far... i find IDPA shooting to be a freakin' blast, and at the same time extremely humbling... i can shoot some very very nice groups at the range... however, on a few stages in some IDPA matches i've shot, some of my targets have looked really really sad, and i've done a few things wrong (like going way to fast and not really hitting a whole lot for instance).

teaches you incredible things about where your "real-world" shooting skills are really at: if you end up using your weapon to defend yours or another's life, there may certainly be more stress than that only a buzzer and stopwatch can provide, but somethings better than nothing. excellent practice.

ok. after all that.

why do we only get to shoot like that in matches that only come around now and again?

even if you can practice/shoot on your property, or like most at a range, most, if not all, are shooting stationary shooting targets (programable ranges still have YOU standing still).

has any one ever thought of the concept of range facilities designed in such a way that were more like what a skatepark is to s skateboarder so to speak, totally different than the usual firing line experience... stages or scenarios, sections or "scenes" presenting multiple targets while including bystanders, cover, clock, lighting, video recording for instant feedback, audio systems producing streetnoise/distractions, gunshots shooting back, maybe even smoke? ...whatever.

to go further, computers could make it possible to create different/custom scenarios for different kinds of training.

more like a course you would take a turn at, not a range with many shooters on many lanes.

sort of a gun amusement park/training facility...

of course the cost would very very very high to build, and the facility would have to be in its own 360 degree, floor and ceiling, bulletproof perimeter, but it could be done.

i think it would be a blast, and i bet it would teach boatloads.

thoughts? heard of anything like this?

There's also a great little range down in Birmingham, AL (Pleasant Grove) that the police use for training, as well as shooting competitions, and it's open to the public. It's nothing fancy but is designed like a "skate park" in a sense where they have 6 different sections to shoot in; from pistol plinking, rifle range, and a walk through firing drill section.

Check it out if you're ever down that way. Again it's nothing fancy, and probably not what you talking about specifically, but it's a great place to practice different shooting scenarios.

Ok... Now just toss in some evil-ninja-robots for targets, and you just described my vision of what heaven's gonna be like
