MK18 thoughts?

Been thinking of picking up a MK 18 for a while. Probably gonna go with a DD. Wanted to get some opinions from people who currently or formerly own one. They cost some coin obviously and I’m fine with that, but worry novelty would wear off fast. I’d probably set it for home defense and obviously shoot it for fun at range.

What are y’alls thoughts on the gun?

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a MK 18? Not acquainted with it.

If I where going that short, I'd just go to an 8" 300 blk.

I think it depends on what you want to do with it. I haven't had a MK18 but have had a few uppers around the 10.5-12.5in. I would say do it in 300 blackout if the intended use is home defense as it is a better caliber out of that barrel length. My 11.5in 5.56 upper is a lot of fun but the caliber is a little lacking at that barrel length.

I am a big LMT fan so if you want the MK18 style I would go with one of their uppers or go DD if you want the block II look.

Thanks for the info. I purchased a stock Springfield Armory Saint a few months back. Just wanted to have one in case they ban them again. Also have a Ruger Ranch hand in 556 as well and shot it many outings. Have not has the Saint out yet. You guys are far more advanced in these rifles than I am.

Not exactly sure what role you’re looking to fill with an mk18 style rifle, but primary weapons systems has the mk111 pro upper on sale fairly cheap on their actual website. They’re piston operated, not di.

I've had a few MK18 and ill tell you this they are great guns if you suppress them not so great with a comp also the ballistic really suck out of a 10.5" barrel so you have to pick the right ammo. 11.5-12 is really the barrel length you want out of a 5.56 gun. The Mk18 is over gas so plan to use a heavy buffer and maybe adjustable gas block if you are going to suppress.

I’ll second this on all points. I got rid of my 10.5 in favor of an 11.5. The 10.5 was over gassed, but not obnoxious, though I hear DD Mk18s are. 
 

11.5 gets you a better performing, softer shooting, more reliable gun.
