CMP 1911 Round 4

Recommended Posts

Anyone else jump in for Round 4? I got my random number back in October and finally got my phone call today! It was like Christmas all over again. 🕺

Can't wait to see what the elves of Anniston send me this time.

Sent my package in before the deadline was extended. My random number was emailed in October. All 4 grades were available when I got the call. Selected a service grade and received it in December - a Remington Rand slide and frame. Definitely very, very pleased.

I got a Service Grade Colt slide on a 1945 RR frame in round 3. I was happy when they opened Round 4 up for repeat offend....".buyers".

I went with Service Grade this time too. Maybe I'll get an all original US&S or Singer that someone forgot to stash for the auctions  😄

Depends on what grade you get and what they have currently available.

Service Grade $1250. Pistol may exhibit minor pitting and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips are complete with no cracks. Pistol is in issuable condition. Pistols may contain commercial parts.

Field Grade $1150. Pistol may exhibit minor rust, pitting, and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips are complete with no cracks. Pistol is in issuable condition. Pistols may contain commercial parts.

Rack Grade $1050. Pistol will exhibit rust, pitting, and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips may be incomplete and exhibit cracks. Pistol requires minor work to return to issuable condition but is functional. Pistols may contain commercial parts.

Inventory is constantly changing as crates are unpacked and processed.

This a quite a savings over U.S.G.I. 1911s on the open market. 😉

I'm not familiar with the CMP process. What does a 1911 go for through them?

What Grayfox said on pricing.

As for the process:  When they open up the next round, they'll have downloadable forms on their site you have to fill out. One of them has to be notarized. Most banks do free notary service for their customers. If not, The UPS Store is reasonably priced. I think it's like $10 or something. You include copies of your ID/proof of citizenship (they have a list of acceptable docs) and proof of marskmanship (again, they have a list. An HCP is acceptable), and you have to be a member of a CMP-affiliated organization. The easiest is Garand Collectors Association https://thegca.org/. $35 for an annual membership and it's all done online.

Mail all that in and wait.

First you get an email with your random number (RNG). This really doesn't mean anything because you don't know how many they're processing. It's just an acknowledgement that they have your packet and you're in the queue. This took about 6 weeks from when I mailed in my packet, IIRC. The only value the RNG has is IF you know the number of someone else who got theirs and when they got their pistol. If you have that from two people, it can give you an idea of how quickly the CMP folks are going through the list. But it won't make the process go any faster or slower.

Then one day out of the blue you'll get a phone call. Caller ID showed Anniston, AL and I was immediately excited.

The CMP person will confirm your information, give you a quick rundown on your status and let you know which grades are available to purchase. You'll pick the one you want and give them a credit card number. They'll send you an email with details also. Unlike rifles that they can ship directly to you, the pistols must go through an FFL. You need to get your FFL to send an updated copy of their credentials with your name in the email/fax so The CMP knows who it's for, even if they've done transfers from The CMP before.

After that it's like any other FFL transfer. You wait . . . Eventually you'll get an email from The CMP letting you know it's shipped and the tracking number. IIRC, this only took a few days after the phone call to get shipping info. This time will take a little longer because apparently I forgot to sign one of the forms so I had to mail in another copy of that form this week. Gotta give it time to get to Anniston and processed before my order goes to the warehouse.  😞

Timeline:
I submitted my packet in early September, got my ID October 11th, and got my phone call this Tuesday, Jan 9th. About 4 months from submission to possession.

What you get is completely random. AIUI, US Army armorers would receive 1911s in and separate the slides from the frames. Each was inspected, repaired, refinished, etc. as-needed. then on the end of the process a slide was grabbed out of the "ready" bin and slapped on a frame out of the other "ready" bin. Odds are extremely high it will be a mix-master gun. Getting matching manufacturer on the frame and slide happens like bubba's Remington Rand above, but my last one from Round 3 didn't match. These guns will also usually have some later-era parts like a replacement barrel, grips, magazine, etc. and more often than not will have been refinished at least once. It's whatever that particular gun needed to make it serviceable again for the Army.

The CMP isn't stupid. They know more about these guns than just about anyone and they're well aware of the value of rare guns. If a more valuable one like a Union Switch & Signal, Singer, or all-original gun from any manufacturer, etc. comes their way, they put those to the side and will auction them.

I just wish you didn’t have to send in all that paperwork again but I guess they don’t keep it on file. Hopefully it gets shredded before it hits the dumpster.

The bad weather in Memphis slowed down FedEx so my Friday update from CMP is that my pistol hasn't shipped yet. I'm expecting it in my hands sometime later this week. Pics will follow!

And a big shout out to Phillip at Goodlettsville Gun Shop for getting on the horn with the CMP rep to get the FFL stuff sorted. As always, first class service.

Phillip at Goodlettsville Gun Shop is good people. The fact you travel that far for a transfer speaks volumes.

I’ll second or thirds this. That’s my local shop. I always try to buy something from them if I get a transfer.

Man, this is kinda eerie............

Years ago, I bought a beautiful WWII Remington Rand 1911 from Goodlettsville GS.  I have no idea if it was Phillip or not, but the folks there were great to work with.

I have at least 5 shops closer to home or work and I still go to GGS when I need a local shop. I've never had a bad experience, never been ignored, and never made to feel like they're doing me a favor by simply existing. I can't say that about several others in the area. They always make sure I get what I need. I prefer to give my business to a shop that appreciates it, and they're one of the best around.

Same. I need some fresh carry ammo. I'll hopefully find what I need in stock there.

Agreed. They are still a bit of drive for me even from this side of town. I have found 2 FFLs about 5 miles from the house since moving to Mt. J - both always treat me right. I still frequent GGS.

I didn't forget....just been busy. Mine's been waiting on me since last Tuesday but just managed to get it home today.

Service Grade 1945 Remington Rand frame with a government replacement slide from Numax Electronics. Apparently those are well hardened slides, so I plan to shoot the snot out of it. 🙂

Markings indicate rearsenaled at Fort Lewis - Mount Rainier Ordinance Depot. I'll send off a FOIA request and see what the Army can tell me about it.

I haven't disassembled it yet so I don't know what markings I may find on the barrel or other bits.

Anyway . . . here's the porn you all want.

Ohhh! I just remembered I have another one with a Colt frame and an RR slide. That frame was bubba-tized but the slide is in great shape. Time to swaparoo the slides and get a matching RR and a full Bubba that I can use and abuse w/o fear of diminishing any value. Perfect!

I got an e-mail Friday saying its my turn. Kinda confused me as last time they called me directly. But apparently, that's what they're doing now. 🙄

I tried to call several times Friday afternoon, but the lady I'm supposed to talk to was always busy. 🙄 Gonna try again on Monday.

Well, I for one am glad they are moving to emails for the contact.  I can remember with my M1 and the 1911's when it got close to "my time" I was answering every hack call, advertisement, political solicitation, etc. on the off chance that the call was coming from CMP and I did not want to miss it.

Can't tell you how many offers for "The best deal on aluminum siding I will ever see" that I received......   😉

Oh, and I never bought the siding................

Update: I ordered the gun on Monday. Here it is Friday and it hasn't been shipped yet. Just got off the phone with them. My order should be processed today. However, they don't ship on Fridays and Monday is President's Day. Should be shipped on Tuesday.

I find this quite odd as every time I've bought from CMP in the past, the order was processed and the gun shipped the next day.  Apparently CMP is short staffed and running behind. Just thought y'all might want to be aware of this. 🙄
