I don’t think one simply goes down to Anniston to build an M1, but you can go buy one if you have your creds in order.

CMP recently announced that they will do another M1 workshop this year.  In this program you will be trained in the skills of M1 gunsmithing  and you will build your own M1 rifle. However, they get so many applications that attendees are drawn by lottery.  It ain't cheap either. Frankly, the odds of getting in are pretty slim. 

However, if you just want a rifle, by all means make the trip to the store in Anniston. That way you can pick from available stock and get one you really like. The staff is extremely helpful,  will answer all your questions and help you get a good one. 👍
