So much for help from SCOTUS

It is not over yet, SCOTUS just said let the lower courts work on it first.

Exactly this. Folks want the courts to come in instantly and be super-legislators and fix everything to the way they think it should be. Thats not how they work, and thankfully so.

If SCOTUS made a knee-jerk decision like that on anything you could throw due process out the window.

SCOTUS generally likes to let lower courts work things out as mentioned.  In this case, since it was decided by a three judge panel, I think they would wait until (if) the full appeals court gets the case and makes a ruling before deciding if they want it on their docket.  The appeal for a full appeals court hearing has already been submitted.

It's worth noting they didn't decide not to take the case, they decided to not stop the law from taking effect.  So there's been no ruling from SCOTUS or precedence set on what the law has yet.

Since this landed on their lap, they could, and IMO should have issued an injunction until the full appeals court could take the case on.  If the lower courts don't get to this, many will have to register their affected weapons those that don't will be subject to arrest, and those that want/need one will be unable to get one.  That, IMO, is the reason to issue an injunction, it would cause irreparable harm to thousands.  I don't see that as a knee jerk reaction.
