New member but looks like everyone has an opinion so...

Looking to buy new carry gun. Either 9mm or .45.

What is your choice? Not looking to spend a lot but want something reliable and comfortable.

Let the fun begin.

It depends on how you plan to carry it. If you open carry, a lot of guns will work. For concealed carry, I find that flatter guns work best. Price also comes into play. How much are you willing to spend?

For safety reasons, I specifically do not recommend any Glock. I'm not kidding. SURPRISE!!! :D

One gun that looks and feels good, but that I haven't shot, is the Kel-Tec PF-9. I use a H&K P7M8 for IWB carry, but most people pass out at the price of that little gem. ;)

45s are not a bad choice for carry, since they are so good at close distances. But I never carry with a safety on. The gun must be always able to be fired. This largely eliminates the 1911s unless you are comfortable with them cocked but unlocked.

I'd go with either sa/da or dao. If you want a 45, take a look at the Taurus 24/7. Unfortunately I think they have discontinued their dao model. It was an excellent pistol.

It was an excellent pistol. hey! on that note the cz's have some great models that are good for carry. I think the cz85's? are da/sa and come in american calibers...they're not as expensive as alot of the german flavors and still function perfectly.

What do you consider "a lot"

Sig 220 Compact

Kimber Pro CDP

Para CCO

Glock 21, Glock 30, Glock 36

Cheaper, Still good pieces depending on what size you're looking for.

Taurus PT1911, looks like a nice 1911, not a lot of money

Depends on what you prefer... but in 9mm, here are a few to look into:

Beretta/Stoeger Cougar 8000

Glock 26/19

H&K USP Compact or P2000

S&W M&P Compact

Sig P239

Springfield EMP-9, XD-9SC, or 1911A1 Ultra-Compact 9mm

Walther P99 Compact

In .45ACP:

Compact, Officers, or Commander 1911 (Kimber, Colt, Springfield, etc...)

Glock 30 or 36

Springfield XD-45 Compact

Sig P220 Carry or Compact... or P245

H&K USP Compact .45

Best way to decide what is best for you, is to look at and try out a bunch.

Welcome to TGO!

+1 on the Taurus 24/7. It is available in 9mm .40 and .45.

It is SA striker fired has a manual safety, and a firing pin block.

I have 1609 9mm rounds downrange without a single issue of any kind. Oh and it holds 17+1.

Many of the pistols that you mentioned are over 400 bucks!

If he's looking for a less expensive weapon look at some of the eastern bloc weapons..everyone LOVES an ak 47 and many of its various flavors...but for some reason people shy away from the pistols..in my opinion, they're better than the aks! more accurate anyway.

Yes... Makarovs and CZs are excellent weapons, generally for half the price of comperable American ones. CPO Sigs are worth looking at, as well (P225, P228...)

I like the CZ 75, shot placement is great its not too bulky. That is when I am not carrying my 1911...

You know you have to have your everyday firearm and the Sunday-go-to -meeting firearm... :D

hahahah that reminds me of a family friend...when I invited him to the wedding, I explained that it was ok to come armed and he said "so! is this belt fed weapons or just shoulder arms?"..

Gander Mountain in Paducah, KY had one in their display case when I was there last week. I got to play with it a bit and really liked what I felt. Very ergonomic. I've been tempted to add one to the collection for a while now.

I've been looking for a good, rugged 9mm. Think I might go with the P-01.

What you really want is a Sig 229, two-tone, in .357SIG, that can easily be found for $600 shipped to your friendly neighborhood FFL, in LNIB condition!
