older winchester .22 semi auto?

so here's the situation,

my dad is wanting to get a .22 rifle. he knows less about firearms than i do. one of his customers is an older gentleman who has an older Winchester .22 semi auto rifle. my dad is wondering about what it would be worth. the only info i have at this time is this: its a semi auto winchester .22lr. the guy bought it new over 40 years ago at i believe western auto? it holds fifteen rounds, so im guessing its a tube magazine.

does anybody have an idea what model it could be? aproxx. value? are these winchesters even worth having shootin?

i know i don't have alot of info but any help or a point in the right direction would be great. thanks

Ya need to find out what model it is. Winchester made a gazillion .22's! So did everybody else.

i think the asking price is $150, and i told my dad that for that he could go buy a brand new mossberg plinkster, maybe a marlin, or for a lil more a ruger 10/22. but my dad is a lil odd sometimes so who know...

I'm not old but do remember when Western Auto sold guns. And Sears, K-Mart and Target. My 10/22 came from K-Mart around 1980 and still have a box of .30-30's with a Target price tag on it!

Absolutely right...

Garufa and I BOTH have old Remington Fieldmaster .22 pumps, circa 1950. They both still shoot great. And they have all metal innards, trigger, trigger housing, etc. They'll be shooting long after some of the modern ones will have had to be fitted with various replacement parts.

Btw, that Mossberg Plinkster is really pretty shoddy...I have one (the 802 bolt job), only have shot it twice, and already have had to locktite the bolt lugs in, which kept falling out, and the front sight broke in half (plastic). It does shoot pretty accurately, but robust it's not. I paid $115 new for it.

I also recently bought new Ruger 10/22. It shoots well, but it's definitely not as accurage as the old pump (or even the Plinkster, actually). 'Course, you get to reel off 10 quick shots, so that's cool. But it's half plastic.

My guess is, if that old rifle shoots nicely, it's probably easily worth the $150 no matter what it is. But I wouldn't buy it without firing it unless it turned out to be something really rare and could be resold just becasue of the rarity, in case it needed a search for old parts or something...

try to buy a brick of .22 before you commit. It's all of a sudden VERY hard to find for less than $40 per 500 rounds. (only target ammo is available)

even online at ammunitiontogo and midwayusa are usually sold out. same with walmart.

Sounds like a Model 190 if I were guessing. I have one that my dad bought for me about 40 years ago. It still shoots great. Depending on condition they ususally sell for around $150 if they are in good condition.

I have a Winchester 190 wearing a Bushnell 4X scope and it is a tack driver. You can find disassembly diagrams and instructions on line, just Google Winchester 190. It is still a pretty popular gun. Mine was in pristine shape and it ranks right up there with my Marlin 60. Very well made and reliable!

well my dad did get the gun, and it is a model 190. it looks to be in pretty good condition. i cleaned it up for him and we shot a few rounds through it. it has an old weaver scope on it which could probly use some adjustment. right now its hard to focus the sight picture. the only "bad" thing about it is is the charging handle was broken at some point, and now there is like a thumb screw thing-a-ma-bob in its place. the thumb screw, is slightly bend and turns but don't unscrew. but everything functions like "butta"

the good thing about being the family "gun nut" is he told me anytime i wanted to shoot it just buy my own ammo one of these days i'll get some pictures and post.
