FORT BLISS, Texas — A Fort Bliss soldier was shot to death Saturday afternoon at the Fort Bliss Post Exchange by her husband, who then wounded himself, authorities said.

The man, a civilian, was in intensive care at University Medical Center in El Paso, said Col. Ed Manning, the garrison commander at Fort Bliss.

Names were not immediately released.

Manning said that the woman was at Fort Bliss for training and lived on the post. He said the man did not live on the post.

Manning said the shooting was an isolated incident, adding that the post is safe.

FBI spokeswoman Andrea Simmons told the El Paso Times that after shooting the soldier, the man tried to kill himself.

Fort Campbell has been pushing for weapon registration for off-post Soldiers, as well as those who live on base. Post Exchange (PX) has a gun shop, which now requires new weapon purchases to be registered with the post on the spot. I'm curious to see if there will be "knee-jerk" policies put into place as a result of the Fort Bliss PX shooting...

Old policy. I had to register and store the first pistol I ever bought, a Ruger Blackhawk .357, at the MP armory at Ft. Sill OK. This was back in 1986.

Bad then, bad now. You'll issue the young man or woman an automatic weapon to defend their country but they can't keep their 10/22 in their BOQ or barracks!

Weapon prices at the Ft Campbell PX aren't too bad ... I paid $750 each for 2 DPMS rifles (an M4 and AR15). Seen the same rifles off post for $900-$1200. Also - saved quite a few $$ by not having to pay state taxes.

Ammo is pricey there, however. What little they carry tends to be top of the line / match grade type ammo, and not the inexpensive rounds for using up at the range.
