He hit his femoral artery with a safety free 38 derringer he was pocket carrying. Like one would keys or loose change. He was DOA when he arrived at Fort Loudon Medical

That’s unfortunate    I bet his last thoughts were  I should have brought a holster

Natural Selection.  I just have a hard time feeling bad for these people.  I guess I am a bad person.

Glad that at least no one else was hurt.

At that time I don't think he was thinking much of anything except the pain he was experiencing....JMHO

No one knew how to apply a tourniquet? Sad way to go. Totally preventable.

I was taught how to apply a tourniquet back in my time in the boy scouts. It is not that hard to do if you can find a strap of any kind and a stick.

Tourniquet was applied but as grayfox suggested I believe it was in a spot where it didn't matter. Just his time

Now we have better ways to handle these wounds, but they are not in most people's kits, and yes, it would hurt like hell, but the patient normally passes out, so there's that.

We have lost a few guys to wounds like this because they are in a place that is very difficult to put pressure on so tourniquets and pressure bandages just don't do it.  So they developed methods using Quikclot and Chitogauze which can be put right into the wound channel, but it's manually done so like I said, painful and takes time someone bleeding out may not have.  Now we have Xstat, which is a syringe full of compressed sponges that you insert into the wound channel, again painful and must be done right to work.

A bit bloody but good to see how it is done in practice (non human).
