newbie question on registration.....

Greetings, I'm new to handgun ownership and had a small question. I have inherited a couple of handguns from my grandfather's estate and I was wondering how to transfer ownership to my own name? The guns are NOT currently registered to anyone at all. One was owned and used during WWII by an uncle and the other was a "carry" gun my late grandfather kept with him on the farm.

Yep. If the guns are in your possession, they are yours. You may wish to record the serial numbers, however, in case they are ever lost or stolen. Also, if you ever wish to sell them, you can transfer ownership to any other private citizen without any sort of paperwork whatsoever, if you so choose. Hope this helps.

Sounds like you inherited a couple of winners. Lock 'em up, shoot 'em, show 'em off or whatever you wish to do, but above all thank God that you live in TN where mandatory gun registration is simply non-existent.

get a receipt from the executor of the estate or the administrator appointed by the probate court. This will show you have legal possession. Then simply enjoy them.

The answer to that is simple.

Go to the post office and get a new Passport.

Take that new Passport to the Department of Safety in Nashville(must be done in person) and request a Temporary Amended Ownership Accusation Form 4.

Or TAOAF4 for short.

Make sure its not a form 3!

I know,I know it looks the same,and has exactly all the same questions,and the same check boxes but its very different.

Fill that out(make sure your serial number is clearly readable!) and send it to your nearest BATF office in care of Selective Crime Reports on Explosives and Weapons for Mediation Enforcement.

Or SCREWME for short.

Once they approve your request you can then,and only then,commence to take ownership.

But only after you take the guns in question to your nearest FFL dealer to transfer it.

Everyone here acquired a gun for the first time. Not all of us were absolutely sure of what was involved in the process. We went through the process and learned. The OP is attempting to do the same thing.

I get it dude, and you get it, heck most everyone here gets it I am sure.

but it may well have gone over the head of a newby poster. Thats all I am saying.

I have explained the registration thing to one of our sales reps at work at least three times in the last couple of months. He still does not believe it. All it took was one person somewhere along the line to tell him there is such a thing. He will not believe differently now.

I'd say the SCREWME acronym was pretty obvious... I enjoyed the humor in it.

You don't have to register a firearm in TN.
