need suggestion on mom's gun

Recommended Posts

My mother has a S&W model 31-1. It is a 6-shot J-frame chambered in .32S&W Long. It has a 3-3.5" barrel.

lately she has asked to go to the range to shoot it. she had her (dominant) right hand crushed in a press in a machine shop a few years ago and she is afraid and curious if she can handle the recoil of the gun in her right hand or if she needs to learn to shoot left-handed. being that it is the .32, i suggested that she needs to trade it for .38spl since they dont recoil that much more and it would be more suitable for self defense. also she needs some ammo for it anyways since what little she has is about 25-30 years old.

what do you guys think? i wish i had a .38 for her to try but i dont.

should i try to get her in a .38 or just have her practice with the .32 problem is though that they dont make a HP or defensive round in .32S&W...

Id get ahold of a little .22 just so she can get used to recoil in general since her dominat hand was crushed. Dont want the extra recoil to scare her before she ever really gets started.

oh she has shot before and has no problem shooting just doesnt want something like my .45auto i used to have or my dads old .44mag blackhawk.

she just hasnt shot in a LONG time and wants to practice and be accurate(and i applaud her for that).

she also wants to keep that size of gun and no semi-autos

side note of .327federal mag. - i love the idea of this cartridge but until colt comes out with a DA revolver chambered in it or S&W comes out with a nice looking revolver in it, i probably wont have one

Ya, I was thinkin' a "lady Smith". However, a little .25 auto is good, because she can make a lot of holes in s short time.

Tell her, like I told my Dad when he came to live with us, that, sheetrock won't stop a bullet.

I bought my mother an sp101 with the shrouded hammer and put .38spl in it. You could do something like that or a s&w 640. ...

That sounds right to me. I have SP101, and .38s out of it feel like .32s - assuming her hand isn't really too bad, probably .38+p wouldn't faze her either.

For gawd's sake, don't buy her one of them little Jframe teeth rattlers.
