Horses on Corolla Beach, Outer Banks NC

Had a great day watching the horses on Corolla Beach in the Outer Banks today.

That’s cool! There is another island near Amelia Island, Florida that once belonged to the Rockefellers. There are wild horses there. They are descendants or the Rockefeller’s horses.

How did the ones in your post get there?

The Outer Banks are great. We typically put my truck on the ferry out of Atlantic, NC to the North Core bank.

Amelia Island is what I was thinking of.

I could be wrong but I think they live on more than one island. Not on the one we visit though.

I spent numerous summers there as a kid. We make the 14 hour drive now each summer now that we are in TN. Family gets a big house at Mile Post 14 . Gorge on fresh seafood for most of the time. Growing up in VA it was only a 3 hour drive to Buxton (that’s way down south).

I used to live in New Bern, south of there and would go fish off Atlantic Beach and enjoyed watching the wild horses off Shackleford Banks.  Loved their beauty and freedom.

The manes and talls are very long, I guess brushing by human owners pull the hair out so "kept" horses have shorter hair.

Spaniards brought them in the 1500s. Wild Mustangs.

Awesome beach !

The Outer Banks were my favorite weekend get away ,when I lived in Virginia.

The fishing, surfing and the history , Grave Yard of the Atlantic.

We come for 2 weeks every year. I have a diesel pusher motorhome and a 4 Dr Jeep Rubicon we tow. So many natural Wildlifeand history areas to visit, we are never bored.

We spent some time in Corolla back during the pandemic.  My kids loved spotting three bears in a tree right around the corner.  The horses are fun.

Cumberland Island National Seashore - the southernmost barrier island in Georgia has horses too.  It's worth taking the ferry out there if you ever get a chance.

Apparently, east coast islands are silly with wild horses.  Assateague Island in a national seashore is what I was actually thinking of.

Cumberland Island is the one just north of Amelia Island.

That’s right   The horses their belonged to the Carnegie family who owned the island.

It’s expensive - but a stay at the Greyfield Inn - which was one of their mansions converted into an inn is worth it.
