Sticky stock??

Recommended Posts

Never had a rifle stock turn sticky, but I've got a entry level rangefinder that went sticky. I had left it in the OEM travel/storage case but inside a plastic tote in the back of my truck for a good while thinking I needed it there.  I tried a wet rag and then some rubbing alcohol, neither of which helped.  I don't use it much and just deal with it.  Totally different than a stock tho for sure.

I was told by a friend that refinished old furniture to use denatured alcohol, which is ethyl alcohol with some extra stuff so people wouldn't drink it. We used it on an old oak table and after a couple of goings over it removed the shellac with out removing the stain.  A light pass with steel wool and it is ready for a new top coat. It does make it look lighter because of all the dirt and such that the shellac has collected and the natural darling of shellac. We just put a new top coat on and it looked great.

As Leroy said try it in inconspicuous spot to test it may not be shellac.

I think some people are not aware that many Savage stocks are plastic.  Under certain conditions plastic gets sticky beyond belief.  Do wood stocks do that?

How does one fix sticky plastic?

If it is that rubberized plastic not sure there is way to get rid of the sticky. I have had several electronic devices with that kind of plastic/rubber and after much rubbing with alcohol I got it on sticky for a few months then it got sticky again. You might try the stretchy self sticking bandage wrap https://www.amazon.com/s?k=self+sticking+bandage+wrap&crid=25KSO9AODO3EY&sprefix=seelf+sticking+wrap%2Caps%2C182&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_18. It comes in a lot of colors and patterns and is cheap.
