Still trying to learn leather carving

I think that's pretty snazzy actually. I do see you seem to have made it backwards, but you'll get that figured out in time... 😆

That looks good, I like a carved style holster you just don't see many off of carved holsters from the makers nowadays.

Many thanks for the kind words and encouragement. I’m having pretty good luck learning lacing techniques, but I’m not yet where I want to be with the carving. Making a smooth arc with a swivel knife is proving to be quite a challenge.

If you have a workbench and some spare time, it is a fun hobby to try and learn. You can learn a lot surfing the web, and get everything you need at Tandy Leather.

Nice job as with everything I've seen from Greg.

Another wrong handed rig I built for someone. Have yet to try the traditional carving but have to make a rig for a navy replica so it's coming. The bird was a real pain to carve.
I've found a lot of good tips on Springfield and Weaver's channels on the utube. edge lacing is hard, my first holster I tried it, baseball stitch. It was actually the best part of that one LOL.

I'll bet! No way I could do it.

Many thanks. I’ve found this to be a difficult hobby.

I’ve learned to make a passable holster, but making them attractive is about beyond my skill set.

There is elegance in simplicity.  Good leather properly prepared and finished is attractive without a lot of adornment.

It’s been fun watching other makers on this forum perfect their craft.  Keep it up, you’ll get there!

I have a stack of "well that won't work" I have issues making my own patterns for stuff no one has.

Having guns no one makes holsters for is what got me going BTW.

The pattern making sort of came naturally to me. I lay the gun on a piece of poster board or file folder and trace that t’s outline. Then I just draw the front of the holster around it, cut it, fold it over, and trace its outline for the back. The. I draw the rest of the back, belt loop, etc., cut out the entire pattern, and trace it on the leather and cut it out.

The pistol above is what got me started in the leather working hobby. You just can’t find a holster for a model 51 Remington. Especially left handed!

I also make knife sheaths, bags, wallets, belts, etc. That stuff is pretty simple except there’s a lot of sewing in some of it.

You are well on your way! Looks great from everything I see. I wish my tooling bench was coming with us back to TN but most all I do now days is done via laser. Everyone wants something crazy or they want it NOW! And laser is just faster. No where near the stylized art of tooling! And with everything it takes up a ton of space in the trailer. I put up a pic of my rack. Figured only a fellow leather worker could appreciate the collection. Keep up the great work.

Nice AKABLKVANDRIVER! Where is that tooling bench? I could go pick it up and, uhh, haul it back. I mean, for you of course….😎 Just kidding. I need to get around to building myself one like that.

gregintenn, your holsters look plenty good to me  I was impressed with the lacing technique. Great work on the carving.

Now that my wrist is healed up I’m going to get caught up and then start working on learning the tooling. Right now I’m still skeered to try the carving. Mine would probably look more like whittling.

Here’s how I learned the double loop lacing technique. Pretty simple and well explained in this video.

Those look great, it's got to take a lot of patience and a steady hand to do all that. Keep up the great work.
