Memphis PD Chief Davis Previously Fired for Coverup

I did not realize that Memphis Police Director CJ Davis had been previously fired from Atlanta PD. As Assistant Chief of Atlanta PD in 2008, she directed the department not to investigate a man who was sexually abusing children, because he was married to an Atlanta PD Sergeant. After APD failed to investigate, a federal investigation led to the molester pleading guilty to federal charges related to producing child pornography (in which he raped minors). This lady protected a child rapist.

I have never been impressed with Davis. She's the gal who left her service handgun in her Porsche last year while she went home decor shopping, and got it stolen. She utterly failed to protect the city from violent protests in 2021, and nearly 700 people have suffered violent deaths in Memphis over the past 2 years. She oversaw diversity quota hiring of officers that subverted established police minimum standards and background qualifications. I believe all five of the officers initially fired in the Tyre Nichols incident were hires under those reduced hiring standards.

I'm wondering where is the outrage over this Peter Principle Person leading MPD? Is it simply the same progressive city politics that put those unqualified officers on the streets (in Davis' SCORPION unit, no less) that protect this unqualified Chief, because she's black? It shouldn't be about the color of her skin. It should be about her character, and her professional results. Well, as command staff of a major metro PD, she actively and deliberately protected a man who continued to rape children under her protection. That is the same moral and professional conduct that her officers engaged in against Tyre Nichols. which she herself said left her "horrified," "disgusted," and "confused."

Chief Cerelyn Davis, president of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives and chief of police of the Durham (NC) Police Department, testifies during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing to examine issues involving race and policing practices in the aftermath of the death in Minneapolis police custody of George …

I've been saying it since day one. She was hired simply because she's a black woman. The politically correct choice.

She's never impressed me any. I don't live in Memphis, but right next door. So her lack of leadership does have an effect on my little town. I believe that all this "transparency"  in the Nichols case is mostly an attempt by her to save her own butt. While these officers are obviously bad, she sure threw them under the bus awfully quick. Even before all the facts came out. CYA is not an effective leadership style.

I can’t believe she hasn’t been forced to resign already.  This unit was her idea in the first place.

Before this is over, a lot of heads will roll. I believe Davis will be one of them. Just give it time.

The more i read about this, the more I think lack of supervision allowed this to happen.  Seems like though this might be the first one that died, there were other complaints.  I truly think i understand the desire to meet violent thugs on their own turf with overwhelming violence in response to violence, but it just cant spill over into the general populace.  But this kind of over response shouldn't have happened even if he had been a bad guy.

The underlying reasons behind this will never actually be uttered. Those who would dare speak it will be sliced clean off at the knees…

I agree but see NOTHING negative about her being said or questions being asked by meda! Why? is she untouchable?

Not sure it's justified till the facts are out but It seems lesser involved individuals are being suspended and perhaps charged....another cop from the initial stop I never heard about till yesterday, EMS and maybe more to come.

So why not Chief Davis? Ultimately she made decisions or ignored problems that allowed this kind of blatent abuse of power to go unchecked. There is no way in hell "the five" hadn't done this sort of thing before. The buck stops with her correct?

She can’t outlast this scandal. Activist have protested at police headquarters and Shelby Farms calling for her job.

Although I usually agree that the Police Chief is ultimately responsible for those under his/her command, I don't always go along with those who want the chief fired or forced to resign.  In this case, this unit is her baby.  She set it up without adequate supervision, and staffed it with LEOs that probably shouldn't even be LEOs.  Two lessons here, at least.  One, don't hire folks just because they tick a box on the equity spectrum.  Two, figure out a better way to get more officers on the force without lowering standards.

I already told you. Davis is politically correct. The liberal media won't attack a black woman in a position of authority.  Goes against everything they believe.

As stated: SHE set up the Scorpion Unit. SHE failed to properly supervise them. SHE let them get out of control. I'm sure as this goes on that more and more wrong doing by this unit will come out. SHE is ultimately responsible. SHE needs to go.

Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis was also heading the Atlanta REDDOG unit at the time when the mayor cancelled the unit in 2011 due to to a multitude of accusations of excessive force, police brutality, illegal searches, and a violation of civil rights.

Fired in Atlanta by the Chief in 2008, Ms. David appealed and was reinstated.

Has anybody heard anything about the person in command of the Scorpion Unit? They were the unit's direct supervisor. I don't even think a name has been mentioned. But I'm sure their head is on the chopping block as well.

Or maybe Scorpion worked directly for Davis?

I’ll ask about that.

There was a lieutenant on scene that night. He was the guy in the skull cap leaning over Nichols telling him he  wasn’t going anywhere.

He’s more than likely the seventh cop under investigation.

Normal command structure. LTs and Majors in the CoC.

He’s not.  The seventh officer was a regular precinct officer, not part of any special unit.

A lot of your post was accurate but you missed the mark on this part.  I don’t recall these violent protests.  I remember the city being peaceful by the national standard of the time.   As for the hiring standards, nothing has changed since she took control in June of 2021.  And all of the officers involved were hired between March 2017 and August 2020, nearly a year before her tenure began.

I have no problem lambasting her for any role she played, but it’s not necessary to throw dirt on her that she didn’t earn.  She’s earned enough on her own.

The patrol officer that momentarily grabbed Nichols feet is also under investigation, but this is Lt. Dewayne Smith who leaned over Nichols and told him he wasn’t going anywhere. Smith is currently attempting to retire.

Apparently Davis has gone into hiding. No public appearances or press conferences for about 2 weeks now. She was called before the City Council yesterday for an update. One of the Councilmen compared her to Waldo.
