Rangemaster Defensive Shotgun Instructor Development Class

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Tom offered this class at Royal Range this past weekend.

3 days / 8 hours of instruction per day

My mentor, friend and erstwhile weekend employer, Randy Harris @Cruel Hand Luke of Harris Combative Strategies attended.

I am very proud of him for walking the talk through investing in himself, scoring 100/100 on the range and written testing and earning Top Gun accolades.

I discovered Tom has a Casino Drill for shotgun; 1st place ran it in 13.77 seconds with a Beretta 1301 equipped with. Holosun optic.

Randy churned it out in 14.75 using and old timey pump action.

I do not know what the course of fire is, but according to Tom, sub 15 seconds is not in realm of normal human beings.

Congratulations!!!

(Hopefully you took good notes for takeaways to share with our organization and students)

Patterning our guns... 1 round of 9 pellet 00 Federal Flite Control to the head at 5 yards and 3 rounds to the chest at 7 yards. This is from a 14" Remington 870 Cylinder Bore Choke. You can see that at 7 yards or less the buckshot load is still so close together that it is essentially a pre fragmented solid projectile. You CAN miss at this distance if you do not AIM.

3 Rounds of same ammo (Federal LE132 00 Flite Control 9 pellet ) fired from same 14" 870  at 15 yards The big holes under arm pit, left shoulder and over right shoulder are the wads going through the paper. All the actual pellets are in the chest.

My target from the Rangemaster Shotgun Qualification. All the pellets and the 10 slugs are in the chest box. The holes outside the box are from the wads. Slugs were Federal Low Recoil LE127RS Truball Slugs.

The top 3 in class, Me , Amy Moses , and Greg Ellifritz .

The top 2 (me and Amy ) both used pumps instead of semi autos. If I remember correctly she was shooting an 870 with some kind of small red dot (possibly an Aimpoint micro?).She was very impressive with the 870 . Greg was running a Beretta 1301.

For more pics and videos you can check out the post I put on Facebook about the class....https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=191490720170239&set=pcb.191494346836543

Pocket dump at the hotel room....Scattergun Technologies (pre Wilson Combat) Professional Model with 13" LOP (Length of Pull ) Stock , Tac Star Side Saddle , Tritium Track Lok Ghost Ring sights and Surefire flashlight fore end. Had this one since 1996 when I got it from Scattergun while they were still located in Nashville so this was a bit of a "home coming " for this particular gun. Also in the pic is Sig 320 Carry w/ Romeo 1 Pro, Smith and Wesson Shield M2.0 and blackjack.
