Tell me about the .204 Ruger

Mike

Recommended Posts

Hunting101 and I were having a discussion on this the other day.

Does anyone have any experience with the .204 Ruger?

What kind of range could I expect?

Recoil?

Accuracy?

From what I see, it looks like a great varmint/coyote rifle. The round moves at 3650fps and doesn't seem to be affected by the wind too much.

Thanks

-Mike

My dad has a Ruger No.1 stainless varmit in .204. He topped it with a Leupold VX-3 6.5-20. It has VERY little recoil, even less then .223. We were shooting it out at the Stones River TWRA range and literally were hitting tacks at 200 yards. It is the most accurate rifle that I have shot. He just got a DPMS AR chambered in .204. We just got the barrel broken in and got glass put on it so we dont know how its going to shoot yet, but i think it will be another tack driver. I think the .204 is a great little round for varmits and target shooting, very fast too.

Go ahead and get it, you know you want to buy it. Then after you buy it we can go shooting. Like I said a friend of mine has one and he swears by it. I have shot it several times and love it. He has killed a lot of coyotes with it so I know first hand it is an awsome varmint gun. We only shot it out to 100 yards at the chirt pit, but the groupings where great, I would say around 1/2 minute of angle shooting of my truck.

I just sold a Savage 16FXP3 package to a friend of mine. Fantastic looking rifle with a Simms scope on top. Dialed in in 4 shots at 75yrds. Groups were about 1/2" without trying. Loud as all get out.

I had......sniff, had a .204 Ruger AR and it was an awesome shooter. Ask Kahrman if he likes em.

If interested in an .204 upper, check out whiteoaksarmament.com that's THE place to get a complete .204 Ruger upper. And, yes, they use the same magazines as .223

The .204 is the consummate tack driver. Back when I was playing with mine, my brother and I would "call the shot", one on the spotting scope and the other on the rifle and we would pick a rock, pine cone, can, whatever we had in the chert pit we use down south as a shooting range and nail them at 100 yards. 1 inch targets are a breeze with that caliber at 100 yards. All I had on it was a Burris Fullfield II tactical that went 3x to 9x.

A few of my friends have .204 rifles and uppers, they are great, very little recoil, great ballistics, and literally explosive on varmints. One guy was getting 1/3 MOA 300yd groups with a standard ruger bolt action and factory ammo!
