First handgun purchase

I looked around and found nothing on this particular topic, so forgive me if it is already posted somewhere.

I've got a Lorcin .32 that my wife got from her brother when he died (he got it in a drug trade so I really want to get rid of it). I'm wanting to purchase a new handgun before I do though.

So here is my question: Will there be any problems purchasing or getting an HCP if I've been diagnosed with PTSD? I really think they just put that label on every vet nowadays. I don't have any flashbacks or things like that, I've only had a few remote nightmares (not even that bad).

Any help would be appreciated. I promise I'm not or .

IIRC, as long as you have not been institutionalized then you won't have any problems getting a HCP.

A mere diagnosis is not enough to prevent you from purchasing a firearm, or acquiring a HCP. It takes a bit more that that.

To purchase a firearm, the ATF 4473 reads:

Have you ever been adjudicated mentally defective (which includes having been adjudicated incompetent to manage your own affairs) or have you ever been committed to a mental institution?

The TN HCP requirement reads:

That the applicant has not been adjudicated as a mental defective; has not been committed to or hospitalized in a mental institution; has not had a court appoint a conservator for the applicant by reason of a mental defect; has not been judicially determined to be disabled by reason of mental illness, developmental disability or other mental incapacity; and has not, within seven (7) years from the date of application, been found by a court to pose an immediate substantial likelihood of serious harm, as defined in title 33, chapter 6, part 5, because of mental illness;

As long as you don't fall into one of those catagories, you should be fine.

I think you will be fine. However, if you decide to keep that Lorcin as something other than a paper weight, then I will have to rethink my position.

If you get enough posts so you can advertise your Lorcin for sale here on this forum, somebody WILL buy it from you, no doubt. I would keep it, myself.

That's the best advice yet. Traded for drugs? It's most likely hot and needs to cool down. Get rid of it.

yeah I definitely don't plan on selling it to ANYONE unless I find out it's not hot. I may just give it to some of my old SF buddies to blow up at a range.
