Unpaid Speeding Ticket in East TN Question

Let's say a friend of mine got a speeding ticket in the Winter of 2001 in a podunk town in east TN, just a little North of Knoxville.

This was his first ticket, no prior warnings, and hasn't been stopped or had his license ran by the police since that time.

Being a stupid kid, with no money to pay the ticket, no way to take off work to go to court, and scared to death to tell his strict father, this guy doesn't pay the ticket, and doesn't go to court/traffic school. He never does anything about it.

Since then, he's gotten his license renewed at least twice, and gotten his CCW permit. He's also had numerous background checks done for the line of work that's he's in. He never received any letters about the ticket, and his insurance never took a hit.

Should he check with that town's court/police to see if he has a warrant or needs to pay the ticket now that he's actually making some money, or has he somehow gotten out of this scott-free, by some great divine blessing, or a judge feeling sorry for a poor kid who got caught doing 5-10 over on an empty straight-away in the middle of the night, and should he just leave it alone, and not stir the pot about it?

I would contact the court for the area the ticket was written. Tell the truth about the matter and find out what needs to be done to resolve things.

No doubt the longer this festers, when it does reach out and bite him it will take a huge chunk. Better to bite the bullet now.

Write a kind and sincere letter and kindly ask them to look into the matter and that you wish to do whatever necessary to rectify the situation. That's not the kind of thing you...err...your friend....wants to find there is a problem with on the way to a big job interview or important family event.
