Henry 45/70 first deer

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Killed my first deer this am about 7:15.  Had 4 pts + 2 smaller points, not quite 1". One shot & he dropped like a puppet with his strings cut.

A  45/70 don't mess around. This was a very healthy deer * & heavy. My bud had to take his John Deere tractor with hay fork to load it on the tailgate.

Guess I should have said, my first with the 45/70.

I expect we all knew what you meant. Is the recoil bad on that thing? Dad bought an old Trapdoor Springfield, and I was surprised at the recoil, even with light handloads and cast bullets. Probably just the shape of the stock and that big old steel buttplate.

It sure is on my 45-70.  I shoot some big-bore rifles, including a 50 BMG, but the 45-70 is THE thumper.

Greg, it came with a nice rubber pad, but after around 15 rds, it's time to lay it down. It's definitely a thumper. Still fun tho....sort of.

Nice shooting!

A friend got a Marlin 1895 SBL two or three years ago right before the price on them went sky high.  His 300 grain loads were pretty stout, but his 400 grain loads were just plain no fun.  Either one would probably put a whooping on a deer, as you demonstrated.
