East Tennessee Flat/Open Ranges

Looking for an outdoor range where you can get some training in. Preferably a flat or open range to just setup targets and run some drills. The only range I've been able to find that kind of fits this is the one ran by the Norris police department. Haven't checked it out for myself yet, but if anybody has been there, how busy is it, and how is it for someone looking to do stuff that isn't just static/bench shooting? Also, any other spots would be nice to know about.

As your in Sevier. county check out Gatlinburg sportsman club.  200 yard rifle range.  100 yard pistol range.  Membership fees apply but are reasonable

Do they allow one to set up their own personal training course?

I don’t belong there. Just know of club. Thru friends whom shot there and where members site  Shows standup targets on website don’t know if people are allowed to move them. To make own course  that would be a plus tho

Gatlinburg, Windrock, Chilhowee, ORSA, are the ones I can think of. I don't know if any would let you do anything other than shoot from behind the line. The indoor ranges and ORSA sometimes have IDPA type practice matches. If you really want to DIY, you'll have to do it on your own property.

Concerning only handgun in non-magnum calibers.

Belonged to both ORSA and Gattlinburg Sportsman's Club.  After four or five years, don't go to ORSA anymore as it is too far away (Sevierville).

With that said, you have greater flexibility for setting up steel or USPCA/IDPA cardboard targets at ORSA.  GSA setup is fairly static but still very nice.  I have spent many a morning out there chronographing or just trying out different rounds plinking steel.  Usually I am the only person there (weekday mornings).  There is a little flexibility in target setup at GSA but your not going to move around like on a IDPA/USPCA course.  You can that with ORSA, IF qualified.

Feel free to contact if you have further questions.   GSA does a very good introduction session upon request.

So there is no confusion...my comments about ORSA are about the "action pistol" range.  That range requires you to be a member of ORSA and to take a safety course to use it.  At GSA you just need to be a member to use their action pistol range.
