Looking for advice on water filtration..

Here's the situation. We got a message from our daughter today - she's deployed in Iraq with her Guard company.

Evidently, the water is starting to get to her (sulfur water from what she said), and she asked us to see if we could find her a filtration unit so that she could make the water a bit more palatable.

I figure some of you might have been to the sandbox recently or have relatively recent knowledge of the Army's water delivery systems and methods. I'm looking to find something that she can use for the remainder of her tour. So if you have solid suggestions, please pass them my way.

Heck, even if all you have are WAGs* and SWAGs**, I'll listen to them too.

Thanks in advance!

Kerry

* WAG is a wild-assed guess.

If she needs a large capacity and non-portable option then the Katadyn Gravidyn is a good choice. Change carbon filter (this is what removes the bad taste) about every 6 months. The ceramic filter will last for around 39,000 gallons(that's not a typo) and filters to 0.2 microns.

If a smaller capacity is ok and portability is a factor then the Katadyn Vario is a good choice. Change carbon filter at 100 gallons and glassfiber filter at 500 gallons. Filters to 0.3 mircrons.

I've ordered from these people before and didn't have any problems with them. Good luck. :shake:

Thanks. Katadyn seems to be topping the recommendations. I think a trip over to Bass Pro might be in order. Yeah, I'll also have a look in Sun and Ski before making a purchase just in case they have Katadyn water filters on sale.

If Bass Pro doesn't have something suitable, I will consider ordering from Moose Jaw.

You might well want to look at REI and Campmor befor you purchase anything.

They may have best selection and/or price.

I checked with REI on Sunday - they did have both of the Katadyn filters I was considering. I wasn't able to go out there on Sunday to check pricing..

Tonight after getting off work, I went on to Bass Pro. After all, it's relatively close to the house, and REI isn't. I bought the Katadyn Hiker model. It looks like it will fit the bill.

Thanks all for your input!
