The Iraq Death Rate

Regardless of where you stand on the issue of U.S. involvement in Iraq, here's a sobering statistic:

There has been a monthly average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theatre

of operations during the last 22 months and a total of 2,112 deaths. That

gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers.

The firearm death rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000 persons,

for the same time period, 22 months.

That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in

the Capital of the United States, than you are in Iraq.

Conclusion: The U.S. should pull out of Washington D.C.

Thought this was pretty good.

So are you saying that more than 2,112 people have been shot and killed in DC within the last 22 months? I find that hard to believe.

If you consider suicides and such, I don't doubt it... but the murder numbers are closer to 35 per 100,000.

But, we should also consider that the majority of US military fatalities were due to IEDs and such, not nearly as many to gunshots... that levels the playing-field significantly. I don't think we have the proper data to properly compare D.C. to a war-zone, for one, in D.C. the victims were defenseless... And two, D.C is a much smaller and more congested geographical area.

You also have to realize that the death total in Iraq lists all of the deaths, gunshot, IED, MVA, heart attack, and chopper crash, shot down or accident. DC only counts homocides.
