I am going to try to use this thread to journal significant changes to TGO's software and configuration of that software, over time.  As such I will be the only one who will be posting to it, but you can always link to a certain post (from another) to ask questions or for whatever other purpose you might have.  🙂

Summary

Members are now allowed to change their screen name once every 90 days and can do so as soon as Day-1 of their membership.

You can find the option to do this in your Account Settings page.

 

Explanation

Members have always been able to change their screen names, but previously they had to have been a member for at least 90-Days or have made a certian number of posts before they could.  This sounded great (to me) in theory but in practice it was also very short-sighted (of me).

It is not rare for a new member to register for an account and then wish they had not used their real name for their screen name, or realized that they made a typographical error in their screen name. 

This change fixes that problem and allows folks one name change immediately, if they so desire, but also keeps it from being an unending game of "Who's Who?"

Summary

Explanation

I realized that while I had set up streams for New Classified Ads and My Classified Ads, there wasn't one set up that would easily show you all of the ads regardless of whether you had read them yet or not.

This just adds that functionality to the site.

TGO Admin Notes:

Live Topics are something that we will experiment with in the future.  I can see where that might be a fun and useful feature to have.

The  iPhone Notifications will be implemented on TGO as soon as possible.  I see that being very useful.

Summary

Added a new Amazon S3 bucket policy that denies any connection attempts using less than TLS 1.2 encryption.

Tested and confirmed that it is working properly.

 

Explanation

TGO uses Amazon S3 storage for many things.  AWS is updating the TLS configuration for all AWS API endpoints to a minimum of version TLS 1.2.  The deadline for this is June 28, 2023.  More information is available here.

Benefactor Subscriptions have a new location in the TGO Store.  You can find them under "Subscriptions" in the store, and by clicking this link to go there directly.

The reason for this change is that Invision is phasing out the traditional e-commerce side of the forum software and moving things like this into a new purpose-built Subscriptions System.  The sooner we adopt it, the less headaches there will be for our members in the long term.

I did notice that if you have a PayPal subscription tied to your Benefactor account, when you go to the new system it prompts you to cancel the existing agreement with PayPal in order to make any changes to your Benefactor membership.
