New members can not send pm’s. They can receive them but not send them. This was just recently implemented to combat scammers on the site.

Ah, now that makes more sense. I was wondering what was going on with these messages. I still wouldn't post my number out in the open. If this was 7 years ago, it would have been added to the Craigslist personal ad section. Specifically the M4M one. The good old days of trolling friends and watching their reactions as they kept getting dick pics while we were out drinking. Very hard to keep a straight face.
