Knife that hits outside its weight class: Pena Mula X-Series

I thought I would share some photos of a pocketknife that I picked up recently.  This is the Peña Mula X-Series knife.  It is a frame lock knife with titanium scales (mine has brown Micarta inlays) and an M390 blade.

This knife packs a sheepsfoot profile blade with a respectable 3.25" length into a very slim, lightweight and classy package.  It's the kind that you could whip out for a quick chore in an office setting without scaring the gentle people, but also has enough substance to it that you could use it for a defensive weapon if you had to.

Specs are:

  • Overall Length 7.625"
  • Blade Length 3.25"
  • Cutting Edge 3.125”
  • Blade Material M390
  • Pivot: Ceramic Bearings.
  • Detent: Ceramic
  • Finish: Bead Blasted
  • Body: Titanium.
  • Pocket clip: Titanium
  • Back spacer: Copper Anodized
  • Pivot collar: Titanium

You can expect to pay around $290 for one straight from PenaKnives.com if you are lucky to catch one in stock.  Other retailers sell them and of course you'll see them traded/sold on the secondary market.  Used, for maybe a little less money.  New, for a bit more.  The secondary market on popular knives tends to be a little "opportunistic" when it comes to pricing.

I am pretty tickled with mine.  It's got a good action to it, flips open authoritatively via the thumb studs, locks securely thanks to the well-tuned frame lock and detent, and the M390 steel holds an edge very well.

I would imagine that my kids will be fighting over who inherits this one.
