"Kyle's Law" Bill Filed for Reimbursement in Self-Defense Cases

I hate titling this topic "Kyle's Law" as it really is a poor choice from an optics standpoint but you can thank Rep. Ben Griffey for that.

Griffey introduced a bill in the TN House today that "would require the state to reimburse defendants found not guilty of homicide charges due to self-defense. The payment would be decided in court and could be denied if the defendant was acting criminally."

I love the idea but I think it’s DOA. I hope not but I think he’s praising Kyle a little too much.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad he was proven not guilty, and I do consider him a hero, but the general public has a hard time going beyond a not guilty verdict.

While I think this bill might slow down an over zealous DA (Nashville, Memphis, etc), the chances of this bill passing both chambers are somewhere between ziltch & squat. One doesn't have to be Carnac to know who will vote against it, i.e. the usual suspects. I'm not even sure it will get out of committee, much less see an actual floor vote.

Thanks for the heads up.  Not sure how to feel a bout this.  It sound fair until one considers it would put more pressure on the DA charging to plea bargain on go full bore for a conviction.  No matter what facts are revealed during the trial process.

It could also put pressure on the DA to not bring charges in a case of this type, clearly self defense, rather that bow to political pressure, media, etc.

Personally, I hope it passes.
