Making Bio Diesel Fuel

Recommended Posts

Has anybody posted a "How to make Bio Diesel" thread. I just pick up a Dodge with the Cummings and at least need to know how to in case the "manure hits the rotary oscillator".

A buddy of mine drives an 83 Mercedes Benz 300D. He looked into starting to process bio-diesel, but discovered that he received great results (with less work) off of running straight veggie oil.

He devised a filtering system in his garage, and collects waste veggie oil from several places around Nashville. He filters the veggie oil, and then it goes into his mass storage container. He added a 2nd filter in his fuel line which he changes once a month. The filter costs about $3. He hasn't bought gas in over 2 years. I've heard the argument that straight veggie oil is more conducive to "gelling" in the fuel lines under colder temps, but he has never had a problem.

I've heard of people making there own batches as well, without using one of the transfer cases (?) that some mixes require, and running it straight through there engines without problems.

I did an experiment summer 2008 at my college where we used biodiesel and gasoline additives. I would advise having chemistry knowledge before you attempt it, and the chemicals you use are poisonous and explosive, as well as corrosive. Fun stuff, be careful kids, and wear protection.

Here's a couple of sites that I've gathered in the past. It's been a long time since I had looked at them.

National Biodiesel Board: http://www.biodiesel.org

Biodiesel Now: http://www.biodieselnow.com (they used to have some good stuff on algae, etc.)

This one is strictly Veggie: http://www.veggievan.org

Greasecar: http://www.greasecar.com (sells whole cars and kits)

I remember seeing some previous sites specifically regarding Cummins engines and their unique attributes toward accepting and retrofitting bio or greasel. I guess I didn't bookmark that, though. If I remember correctly, one of the first things to "go" when using an alternative would be your injection pump. Some experienced residual run-on after ignition kill, especially if used for short trips, or not keeping a bypass method handy to change over to a smaller regular diesel fuel tank a few minutes before stopping.

Good luck!

I have been in the chmical industry for 24 years. Without going into a lengthy explanation here, it will cost you more in the long run than just buying it at the pump.

Trust me. It sounds good on paper but it's not.
