I was in a small market two days ago, even the cigarette rep said this is only a tax on the little people. The "wealthy" can still afford their habit, the poor and middle class, most of us on here, won't be able to afford it.

I keep with the occasional Cigar or Pipe, domestic cigarettes make me gag. I can smell them two cars away with my windows rolled up. Luckily I have a couple hundred cigars in my humidor. The tax is on all tobacco products cigars included, although you can get them imported.

In the words of Bob Marley

LEGALIZE IT

Then tax the crap out of it.

The government has to pay for all of the medical coverage it's going to start paying out on the people who have willingly been putting themselves at risk by using tobacco products.

There are so many different illnesses that can be tied back to tobacco. I find it amazing that people still pick up the habit given the health implications of doing so.

People drive cars even though people die in them all the time. :stick: Some can live with the risk, some cannot.

I quit smoking the 1st of the year, had 2 or 3 since then, but smoked 2-3 packs/day for 25 yrs.

My question is just where all this tax money they are raising for pet projects thru tobacco taxes are going to come from when they succeed in forcing people to stop through higher prices ie taxes?

That was my thought too, but I don't see people quiting smoking, I just see a crime rate getting ready to rise with all the convenience stores robbery's getting ready to take place when people realize the price went up.

carton of Marlboro Ultra Lights and a 20 oz coke came to 46.00 today at Mapco.

BUT IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN...right. Only thing I could think about was a 2.00/hr waitress beating the crap out of her kid because she was couldn't afford her smokes and was going through withdrawals.

I am not 100% sure on the following but the carton of smokes which i finally did buy yesterday, seems to taste weaker (easier to inhale) than what i was used to, also taste a little different.

I do remember there was a time around 10 yrs. ago when all reduced the amount of tobacco in all cigarettes!? :D?

Cancer, emphysema and other fatal ailments couldn't care less what a person's net worth is. :)

People drive cars even though people die in them all the time. Some can live with the risk, some cannot.

It takes a pretty huge leap to somehow compare a recreational drug (tobacco) to motor conveyances. People can drown in a bathtub also; should we become French and stop taking baths?

Any chemical substance that can affect mood changes to that degree can't be a good thing to pump into your body can it? :D

True, but hard Liquor is a lot more dangerous due to it messing your mind up 100%. I have never heard of anybody having a DUI after smoking.

So let the govt. raise taxes by 100% on Liquor!:P

I quit smoking 2 years ago next month...... It was hard, and I used Chantix and it helped. Some days I still want one.

I say If this increase is for healthcare "for the children"............Why not raise the taxes on the crap they use.......Diapers, candy, toys, ect. :D

Just sayin':hiding:

But you are making the assumption that anyone who drinks is doing so in excess. I'll enjoy a shot of Single Barrel every now and again, but I won't drink it to the point that I'm impaired let alone drunk. Just don't like the feel.

A person who drinks occasionally is doing about as much harm to himself as a person who smokes occasionally, I suppose. Perhaps less but I'm not an expert on that so I'm not going to split hairs. We'll call it even for the sake of this discussion.

The problem is, I don't know too many people who just smoke cigarettes or dip tobacco occasionally. I do know some folks who will smoke a cigar every once in a while, but don't seem to be in the habit of it. For some reason, cigarette smokers almost always have one hanging from their lips or are stepping outside every 45 minutes or so for another. To me, that's the sign of an addiction.

Go ahead and tax the hell out of Jack Daniels. I won't be affected too badly since I go through a fifth of it maybe once a year... once every six months if I've been really frisky. If I were always walking around with a glass of Scotch on the rocks, however, I'd be just as upset as you are right now. :)

I think a tax like this is bull****. It would be wrong on a single industry or product type.

Just one more reason to get rid of every ******* in DC

Yep, they add it to tobacco as they know cigs are not PC.

I don't use any tobacco, but it still pisses me off.

What is Chantix?:D

It is a prescription drug, you can talk to your Dr. about it or check out http://www.chantix.com/ for more info.

With the Chantix you take the pill for a week or two while still smoking then try to quit smoking but continue taking the pill. It's a 12 week program if memory serves correct. It helped me A LOT!!! and I would recomend it to anyone who wants to quit but can't.

But, you do have to WANT AND TRY to quit. It is not a miracal pill.

Well my opinion is this and I will be blunt you are paying a company to do harm to your body. Argue with whatever point you want but in the long run your doing harm to your body. Cigs, dip, chew etc. Will cause some people to die earlier which is a darn shame.

What i find sad, is that my question turned into a debate on the evils of smoking!:D

+1!

I am like you, David. I will have a shot every now and then. I also enjoy my pipe or the occasional cigar. I guess I will pay more for it.

Personally, I don't think you can compare cigar smoking or pipe smoking once in a while to a pack a day. Some studies even show that pipe smokers live longer than cigarette smokers.

Seems like those who smoke pipes and keep the @#$@# thing lit are a bit more laid back.

You ain’t seen nothing yet.

Tobacco

Liquor

Guns

Ammunition

And when they have those taxes as high as they can possibly be… they will start on property taxes and add income taxes.

Someone has to pay the bills. And everyone seems okay with letting our manufacturing base be overseas.
