Did TN gun laws change?

I was killing some time in a pawn shop / gun store yesterday and overheard a conversation between the counter clerk and a customer. Seemed to be the customer was wanting to trade a gun on something new and said something about a private sale. The clerk said that the laws had changed and that now for a private sale you had to be sure the person buying was a prohibited person and if they were you got the charge as they did and that you had to produce and keep a bill of sale/receipt.  I hadn't heard anything at all about this and wondered if it was real or if was just "gunshop counter BS"/sales tactics so they got a gun they could make money off of.

Federal (or TN) law has not changed in that regard.

As ever, you must not "know or have reasonable cause to believe" the buyer is a prohibited person (for all the various reasons). If it can be proven you violated that, certainly you can spend some significant prison time and big fine.

No BOS required, although many sellers prefer that.

That was my understanding before I heard the conversation yesterday. It just seemed like something you'd in a scene on Law & Order that it caused the WTF?! reaction in my brain.

I've overheard some stupid things in gun shops. Sadly not the best place to get information.

I swear, I think Gun stores hire the dumbest individuals they can find, to work behind the gun counter, sometimes.  Seems the worst offenders are places like Academy and Bass Pro.

True, but then again I expect people working in gun stores to either know what they’re talking about or refrain from blathering.  It’s not hard at all to admit you don’t know rather than trying to show off.

Once upon a time I overheard a gun bar conversation, salesperson bragging about his 'extensive' training.  Claimed he had his carry permit !  That was the extent of it.

Me, I have no problem admitting ignorance of something...and dismissing those who don’t know what they’re talking about.

I'd expect about the same from cops & lawyers as well, but if you want to know the law, ask a criminal

What do you think they're going to get for $10/hr? A firearm engineer?
