Powder for .357

I've been loading for years out of a gallon of mixed powder I've used for years, and have finally run out. I think it was close in characteristics to AA #2. I got it really cheap and it has served my plinking purposes well. I used Unique back in the 70's, and it did just fine, too.

I'm needing to decide on a powder for moderate cast bullet loads (158-180gr loads).

What powders do you all like for this purpose?

Thanks,

HIckok

W231/HP38 should work well there. (I'm having a great time using 231 in light 180gr 44 mag loads right now!) If that powder that was close to AA#2 (was it WC820?) was good enough, just get some AA#2.

AA#5 would also do well. Bullseye too. I don't really like titegroup for lead loads. It's too darn hot. Of course, you'll also have the die-hard Unique fans out there, and I'm slowly coming around to it in 44mag, but I don't think I'd bother with this load.

I have found AA #2 closer to Bullseye and AA #5 closer to Unique and W231, all good powders though. Y'all all know I am a big fan of W231 for a all around mid range powder. For magnum loads I agree with Elmer Keith and use good ole 2400. I know H110/296 gives more blast, kick and more velocity but the reality is it can never touch 2400 for consistency from shot to shot in the 357/41/44 mags.

I already use W231 for .45 ACP, .44 Special, & moderate .45 Colt loads. I might just switch over to it. Nice powder! I use 2400 for warmer .44 mag and .45 Colt, so I always have it around if I want to crank up some hot .357 rounds.

I tend not to load really hot .357 rounds; I have bigger bullets and calibers if I need a big hammer. :-)
