My county is now taking applications for this position. Anybody here know anything about being one? I wonder if it would be a worthwhile position to apply for.

No sir. The only qualification here is a high school diploma. They will train.

be a way for me to justify moving back up there but I'm sure that having a hang em all and let God sort em out attitude would disqualify me 🙂

I don’t think you’d be trying anyone. Just writing the invitations.

This may sound amusing coming from your local anarchist, but seeing as you’re retired at quite a young age, get involved in your local government. If this is your inroad, make it a good one. But these are the people who have the most influence over your life. Way more than any of those assholes in Washington or Nashville. These are the places where you can possibly provide influence to help keep where you live just a little bit freer.

Get at it and make a difference.

I found out what not to do. You don't write a warrant for a woman breaking into her own house. You'll probably remember Ralph. He was the game warden when we were kids.

I remember warden Meeks, been quite a while.  As for Judicial Commissioner,  I was asked by Judge Linville if I would be interested in the job. I declined, due the hours required at times. Having worked as a Corrections officer at the jail, I was familiar with the all hours aspect. Not for me.

Think it over well, do what you believe best. Wish you the best.

Tell me more, sir. Hours aren’t so much of an issue for me.

If it’s during business hours when the courthouse is open, we go there to get an arrest warrant drawn up. As a judicial commissioner you’d be the one being called out at all hours of the night, through the wee hours of the morning, up until the courthouse opens, to draw up the arrest warrants, including all weekend. I know somebody’s gotta do it, but I never figured out why anyone “wants” to do it.

ETA: (In response to the question about the hours.)

res308's post covered it pretty well, as to what you do. We only had 2 commissioners,  1 full time, 1 pt. time. Part time usually got the short end of the hours stick. Likely,  Macon being larger & larger case load, there may be more help. Find out how that works there. Not being familiar with Macon, not much more I can add. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I vaguely remember Meeks. I can relate to being arrested for breaking into your own house too. In Macon Co. at that. Being taken into booking is another tale that would get a sympathetic deputy fired. I will only say there was only one person in the jail that night who was armed.

I agree with Chucktshoes. we always need good people with common sense in government. If you have the time and inclination you have my support. That may or may not be a good thing depending on who you ask though.

Pm me if you have specific questions but I served as a jc in Rutherford County for about 6 months in 2018-2019. The qualifications were the same there as well, just a high school diploma.

6 months? That doesn’t sound promising. Here it’s a 4 year term. Did you not like it?

It was a weekend shift, 12 hours Saturday and 12 hours Sunday while I was working 5 days a week at my other job...I could only handle 7 days a week so long lol. Job was fine though. I also left because I couldn't do what I'm doing now while still working there, would have been a conflict of interest.

At least in Sumner County, the judicial commissioners primarily set bonds for arrestees.  They also occasionally grant search warrants (primarily for blood draws when DUI suspects refuse a blood draw / most officers find a judge when they want a warrant for a residence).

Seems simple enough. Do it pay well?

Back in the day, in Sumner County (i.e. this response is completely useless for your purposes) I believe it was pretty low paying (not minimum wage maybe but not much more).

Thanks. The deadline for applications has passed. I got to thinking about all the folks I know who have children, grandchildren, etc. that are quite familiar with law enforcement. Hearing crap from these folks just didn’t seem worthwhile the more I thought about it. Oh well, I’m still having fun riding bikes and shooting deer.

Writing up warrants in a small town would not be something many would want to take on.  😀
