All right, I already have a loaded AR-15 so I never thought I would be in this position, today I picked up my new Shotgun and while doing the paperwork I was offered a DPMS .556/223 stripped lower receiver that was delivered while I was in the store for a very good deal, I bought it and am now looking at what upper receivers to go with, for any of you guys whom have built your own, who makes the best compete Upper assembly to go with the rifle that I build?

I would appreciate any suggestions to the best quality for the price that I can get,

Thanks

The "BEST"?

A lot of AR connoisseurs are quite partial to Noveske, but I would call LMT "high-end" as well.

Then again, you could go with a custom upper from someone like White Oak Armory.

I guess the possibilities are limitless

I very much like LMT, i have a few friends that own them, one of my buddies just told me that I could put a 6.8 Upper on this? if that is true I will get a gas piston LMT or LWRC complete upper assembly for it, it would be nice to have this in another chambering beside .223/556 do any of you know if this can be done? the stripped lower says .223/556

If I recall correctly, you can legally attach any upper to a lower engraved as .223/5.56, however, if it were to be an SBR it would need to be engraved as a "multi cal" AR if it were to be anything but .223/5.56...

I could be wrong on this, so don't quote me :tough:

Lowers do not need to have "Multi" engraved on them in order to use other calibers.

(I quoted you anyway. :tough:)

Hmmm... don't know where I heard that.

So, if you SBR it, don't all Calibers have to be listed ON it? ...or just in the paperwork?

On the Form 1, you should list the primary caliber you intend on using. ATF will not accept listing "Multi" in that section, even though that is what is says on some lowers. You are free to change calibers, as long as you can readily return the rifle to its Form 1 configuration. If you make a permanent change to the rifle's configuration, then you need to notify the NFA Branch so that the info can be updated in the NFRTR.

Sorry for the thread hijack.

It is hit or miss finding uppers nowadays. If someone gets uppers in stock, they usually sell out very quickly.

If you are familiar with Bravo Company, I would get on their email notification for the LMT and BCM uppers that they sell. Both are excellent quality uppers. Bravo had some BCM middy uppers in stock yesterday, and they were sold out within minutes. You have to act fast in the current market.

I appreciate it. I am in no real hurry on it, so im thinking of ordering this from LWRC it is like a 25 week backlog http://www.talonarms.com/talonarms/index.php?main_page=popup_image&pID=1026

Well I decided to keep it .223/.556 and save some money, here is what I will put with the stripped DPMS lower, Stag Arms complete upper with quad rail in .556 Nato, 16 inch 1/9 twist chrome lined barrel (similar to my RRA) Magpul collapsible stock and grip, I have a 25 week wait for the Upper, the furniture will be coyote tan to go with the 5 Pmags I have in that color, the wait is 25 weeks,so plenty of time to buy optics and a Surefire Light, I will post pictures when it is done, this will be fun to build

Right now, I am on backorders for uppers with Del-Ton, Inc., D9 Firearms, and Michael Williamson (of Freehold fame). I still have two to three months to go on the first (after already waiting three months now), another month on the second, and maybe only three weeks on the third... whoever delivers first, wins.

Trust me, parts are hard to come by these days. Took me just two months to come up with a lower parts kit.

I am getting ready to start my first AR build... if I can find the parts. Sure wish I would have done it six months ago when I got the bug.

I plan to join the waiting list for a DTI kit (16" M4 or mid length - still trying to decide). I have found stripped lowers from DTI and Stag Arms for about the same price. How do the two compare? maybe I should go with the DTI lower since I plan to get the DTI upper? Does it matter? SA has a cooler logo...:usa:

I plan to place orders tomorrow... can't wait but I know I'll have to!

Batman, Gun show tomorrow in Knoxville. There will be some lowers for sale, probably very few uppers. I would only buy a forged aluminum lower, most are the same spec. Steer clear of the polymer lowers like Vulcan.

I may have a 20" upper for sale, no flash hider. May go with another carbine.

You picked a heck of a time for doing a build.

Take your time and don't get in a hurry for your parts.

LPK's are hard to come by now and takes some time for the uppers unless your up for a slightly used one.

Good luck

If you want a LPK, call Fulton Armory. My last LPK was $95 shipped but they had them in stock every time I called. It's finding barrels and bolts right now that's a pain

Thanks for the info on the show! I might be able to cruise up that way and check it out.
