bought an m1 garand , need info

yesterday i bought an m1 garand sa in excellent cond. i just noticed it has national match front and rear sights . the barrel is marked a1-ord ap1 inct0m\ /a rear sight is marked 52 with a backward c bolt is marked 6628287 sa i paid $800 the rifle came with 200 rounds of lake city cmp ammo and two bandoliers of greek ammo in clips . any info would be appreciated .

im 67 years old and computer illiterate so i am not allowed to post pictures . i would love to , but the rifle is better than the one i was issued in 1961 in the army .

The NM sights will have to come off.. I dont think that NM sights comply with JC Garand comp rules. If the NM sights are millitary then they are worth some dough. If they are aftermarket then they will serve thier purpose.

The bolt is post war... what is the serial range on the receiver?

If you want to know more then field strip it and I can help you find out which parts are right for the serial number and which ones were added later.

I think I saw the same M1 posted on the local sales network. If so the stock my be a boyds stock and not military.

it was on lsn guns , probably an aftermarket stock , no cartouches . serial # is 35606** probably 1945 . any more info would be appreciated . i had it apart and cleaned it , it appears to have not been fired or carried much .

Serial # puts receiver in March '45. That barrel marking has me stumped. That's under the op rod right? Sounds after-market.

digital camera ? the markings are under the op rod . its probably not a n m rifle but it is in excellent condition .

NM parts are very common on Garands. Are you sure bbl is not marked FED Ord

they imported a lot of them in. Pull the slide open and look at rear of bbl markings are normally there MFG&Date. Winchester And Marlin marked the top of bbl and you have to remove rear top hand guard to see it. You may need to wipe wit oily rag to read.

i had the trigger group out and found a screw and spring that i dont remember being there on my issue m1 rifle . it adjusts the trigger pull but not the travel . the trigger breaks at about 3 to 4 pounds . the previous owner was probably a serious shooter . the barrel , sights and trigger make me think that the original owner was a competition shooter . i would still like some more info on this rifle . either way , i love this rifle . will be shooting it shortly .

You remember correctly, there aren't any screws in a Garand trigger group (I just looked at one). Have you checked out the CMP forum? If there's an answer you can find it there.

it looks like someone set this rifle up to be a shooter and not a correct rifle , but thats the way i feel also . if it works and does the job , i will be happy . still would like more info on this rifle .

Scott Duff is the author of the M1 books that I use to evaluate an M1. What you are calling the chamber cover is the bolt. The 6528287 on the bolt is the part number. The A-10 is the heat lot number that helps date to bolt down to a particular month.

If it is a shooter enjoy it! It should serve you well. I'd stick with M2 ball ammo like what you have.... most "commercial " loads are too "hot".
