Radar Detectors

KPD is going balls-to-the-wall with tickets, as I'm sure a lot of y'all have noticed. NCSHP is worse, however, so I need a radar detector just to stay safe (not because I speed; I got pulled over my last trip home with cruise control set at 65 in a 65 and he claimed I was doing 75 until I asked to see the radar readout). What do y'all like and use? I'm looking to stay in the under-$100 range but need both POP and Laser detection.

Had that problem once with a Dodge van, turned out the od. was off by 10 MPR @ 65mph.:) I would suggest getting your od. checked just to be sure you are only doing 65. :D I got out of my ticket. But I also now check all my od. with a known good one when I buy just to make sure I have no more suprises.

And as far a a radar detector. In every instance I've seen by the time it goes off he's got ya anyway. I don't own one and haven't for years (well it might be in the barn, not sure on that). I refues to use one. I set my cruise @ 4 to 6 miles over the posted speed limit (unless construction) and ride, and wave at the state boy's as a pass. KPd are butt heads, they will stop you for 4 miles over but let the guy who passed you going 15 over slide. You are easier to catch.:P

Had it checked the next day and she was dead-on accurate...I mean, the car was only two years old and the Trooper tried to pull that one on me. Did I mention that I was getting passed like crazy, too? I mailed that NCSHP outpost a copy of the mechanic's findings just for kicks.

During the summer they had someone standing on the Callahan Dr. bridge over I-75 with a LIDAR gun clocking people and radioing down to Johnny Harley. The KPD cadets now are pretty overzealous. Walk anywhere on campus and they're ticketing at the meters. I pulled into a space on Volunteer and before I could get out of my car one of them was there waiting to write a ticket. Four quarters in the meter later he walked away oh so downtrotten... :tough:

The best radar detector is FREE. If you've got two eyes in good condition you should be able to spot the popo before he spots you! If the detector sounds you may already be gunned. All depends on the circumstances.

My Escort Passport 8500 x50 has saved my bacon too many times to count at this point. Unless you're the only car on a long stretch of road you'll read the popo when they shoot the guy in front of you, even from a mile or two ahead with modern detectors.

Oh, and the good ones almost never give false positives like the older ones did...

What is the problem with doing the speed limit? I am not a math whiz but 5-10 mph over on a 70 mile interstate trip doing the speed limit will save you what... 3-5 minutes?

Some of us have received tickets that were either incorrectly attributed to us or have inadvertently drifted above the speed limit. I know I have on both accounts. If it were as back-and-white as 'doing the speed limit', many of us wouldn't want or need radar detectors...

I've not used a radar detector in probably 10 yrs either......I too always said that it saved my tail, but once I took it out of the truck....this strange thing happened....I still wasn't getting any tickets. But I do drive around consistently scanning ahead. That also aides in situational awareness. IMHO, detector's can give you that false sense of security. That kind where you relax and expect something or someone to do it for you. I did however find my self driving faster and thinking that I was invisible when I had a detector on board. But as stated above, most cops now days don't ride around with the lazers a blazin all day long. Usually by the time they shot a beam your way, your already busted.

Since you haven't driven around with a detector in 'probably 10 yrs', I'd suggest your data is outdated or faulty. 90%+ of the cops I see are sitting/cruising with the KA blazing...

I know Passports are some of the best but maybe a little pricier than others. (still cheaper than a ticket) On the KPD they are dicks. I was following 3 other cars all doing ~36 in a 30 and I got the ticket. Went to court because it was my first ticket ever and the judge was being real nice throwing out tickets right and left until he gets to me. I had to pay for driving school and waste 8 hours and 2 monday nights. He had just dismissed a ticket where a kid was doing 19 over on the Pellissippi Speedway. Needless to say I was not a happy camper.

I agree that radar detectors are pretty silly. Do the speed limit. It really is that simple. If you find yourself drifting over constantly, make a habit of scanning your instruments periodically. Use cruise control. If you believe they have given you tickets in error in the past, well a little gizmo isn't going to stop that. Get your spedometer checked. Make a habit of driving a couple mph UNDER the speed limit. Plus most cops, at least in my area, actually hide, so by the time they light you up you've already passed them and its too late anyway.

My Escort 8500 saved my little tushy driving cross-country twice now. Around here in town, all of the cops seem to use Ka exclusively, so it is not hard to filter out the background noise of door openers and whatever else.

I went ahead and hardwired mine into my car (surprisingly easy), and it is on whenever I am rolling. For radar guns, its accuracy cannot be beaten, simply because it tends to pick up the emissions from around corners, over hills, and generally at ranges of half a mile to a mile, and sometimes beyond. And, as everyone knows, radar devices transmit around two times farther than they can actually see.

As for ladar, however, this thing can detect it, but it is basically just telling you to go ahead and pull over at that point.

Have you ever driven the speed limit around I-285 in Atlanta? Doing so is a death wish.

Dad actually had a LIDAR jammer on his Commander before it got wrecked. He got it off the car before State Farm got it, so if it still works I'm putting it on one of mine.

KPD is just ruthless now. I was coming home tonight doing 55 up I-75. The car next to me was barely passing me and got pulled over.

The best thing about radar detectors.......When I stop someone that has a radar detector, they automatically get a ticket. If you didn't intend to speed and try to get by with it, you wouldn't have one. They normally get a state ticket, mo' money.

And Linoge, please don't drive anywhere near VA. It is a $300 ticket to even possses one there, and they have a detector detector. And to top it off, they confiscate the thing, if it is hardwired, they will just rip it out, or impound the car. Your choice, they are nice that way.

No worries, already aware :). Virginia, D.C., and military bases (which was something of an annoyance when I happened to work on one) get kind of cranky when you roll up with technology in your car. Some company supposedly makes a detector-detector-proof radar detector, but it was a good 50% more, and I hardly cared...

So,someone please inform me again what Ill need to be safe from speeding tickets!

If I got everything right,Ill need a:

radar detector,a lidar detector,a KA detector,a detector for detecting detectors,a detector jamming detector, and a detector detector detector thats detector-less!

Is that right?

Damn thats allot of detectors! Is there any clause for wrapping tin foil on my wheels? :)

Just in Virginia. Most of the other states aren't a bunch of commies.

Most detectors are multi band nowdays. X,K,ka,laser, etc so you only need the one.
