45/70 reloading

I'm still in the midst of reloading several hundred rounds. Just finished a batch of 50. Taking my own sweet time. Once they are all finished, I'm hanging up my press.

This has turned into mostly hobby. I've got more than I'll ever need, barring an all out attack,  or they allow drive by Buffalo hunting again.

Just enjoy doing it, good for winter & rainy days.

FYI, I'm using Hornady 300 gr. JHP,  IMR 4198. 40.5 grs,  new Starline brass trimmed to specs,  CCI BR2 large rifle primers.

I have not heard of this spec, please tell us where you found it.

I as well have more hand loaded than I will ever shoot, it feels good to not worry about ammo.

I think I enjoy the loading more than the shooting. I know, semi-heresy on TGO!  I doubt I'll ever hang up the press, though, I still enjoy shooting and always have a lot of empty cases around.

From IMR's site.  The Lee reloading manual has some reduced load formulas that I've used very successfully in other calibers. I'm not sure 4198 is included in those formulas, but if I think of it while I'm in the reloading room I'll check. I always love going into the manuals.... it's a sickness.

IMR 4198 is NOT one of the powders listed with load reduction data in the Lee manual, however their data for 45-70 lists 36.3 - 41.2 g of 4198 for 300 g JHP.   The Lyman cast bullet manual lists 34.5 - 49.7 g for 292 gr lead bullets.

I still use a flip phone, but just for text, and very few words. I use a tablet at work or a laptop at home.

.45-70 is probably the round I shoot the least, yet enjoy reloading for, the most! I load subsonics (535gn GC cast over a light load of AA5744 for right on 1120fps) Sounds like a .22, kicks like.... well, like you'd expect! But my gosh are they accurate. I have Vernier sight marks out to 800yds with this load. 

One day, I'll shoot a pig with one just to see what happens. I'm guessing it won't be near as impressive as I imagine.

I've been looking for a Lee bullet mold to cast some 340g bullets, but can't find one. I'd like to try loading some 45-70 with Trailboss and see if I can't make a plinking round. Anybody have any success with lighter loads for the 45-70?

I enjoy shooting the 45-70 round but haven't reloaded it yet.  I'm still sourcing the necessary items as my amount of brass increases.

Cast is really about all you need in a big caliber like .45, which is actually a .458 -.459 bullet. A big flat point will work great.
