That was my first levergun as well and still one of my favorites.  You'll love it.  They are addictive (he says 8 leverguns later).

I love shooting mine. It’s a Rossi .357 I picked up on the cheap. I took it apart,restained the wood, polished up what edges I could and put a lighter spring in the magazine tube. Runs well now with most ammo. Still has trouble feeding some reloads.

I can also recommend a 99 Savage.

I wanted a lever action and ended up with  a '56 Savage 99 acquired from Best Gun Buddy.

They have as neat a history as any firearm out there, have a 99 year run.

Mine would be shooter grade, so it has an awesome patina and the case hardening on the level is pretty cool.

That's what I did with my Rossi 92. Except, I got some black walnut wood from Precision Gun Stocks and reworked the action using Steve's Gunz kit. It worked fine before, but now it runs better than any other lever action I've held. Oh, and my dad engraved the reciever. https://store.stevesgunz.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=5

I'm not so familiar with the 44 mag, but in .357, the powder typically burns out in a 16" barrel, so that's the optimum length for a .357.  I would suspect the the .44 mag as well.  But I profess that I could be totally off base with that assumption.  

Shorter is also lighter and faster handling.

I prefer the shorter barrel. All 3 of my pistol caliber lever guns are the 16" Trapper length. Makes for a handy and great handling rifle.

I have a Winchester '73 that is in .45 Colt.  It has a 23"+ barrel.  Is that not performing efficiently??

Give slower, magnum pistol powders a try. Win296 or Alliant 2400 come to mind.

Lol! Second from the bottom is an 1894 Marlin in 44 mag. I really like that rifle and don’t have any inclination to part with it. I can highly recommend one. There are many out there. You’ll run across one eventually.

So, do I want a lever action with an octagonal barrel, or a lighter round barrel. This will most likely be a fun gun (for me) not necessarily a hike through the woods gun. But if I decided to let it go down the road, which would be more sought after?
