I want a lever action rifle.

I would start with .22 just so you can afford to shoot it a lot. Then if you get hooked you can start adding more. I currently have 4 Marlins and 1 Henry. I started with a .410 that was a gift when I was 13. I then inherited a .22. I added a .357 to go with a revolver I had and so I could shoot the cheaper .38s in it. Then I added a 30-30 just because I wanted something bigger for no real good reason. My latest add was the Henry in a .22 Mares Leg just for fun.

Oh I can shoot it a lot. Got that figured out. "Handloader", I don't enjoy shooting .22 ammo as much as I did.

A guy I work with has a Henry .45-70. Hasn't got the chance to hunt with it yet.

Same here, neighbor, bought mine after the season last year. Same time the tornado came thru Lebanon.

I've been spending the down time working up a good reload. Came up with one that works great in this rifle.

3 rds @ 25 yds.

I have to echo the rest of the group. find a Rossi in pistol caliber you already shoot. I've had Rossi revolvers and they are sturdy firearms. my first lever was a 336C Marlin in 30-30, about 1973 vintage if I ran the serial number correctly. It doesn't match your just off the saddle/trail requirement but I prefer the Marlin for rifle caliber. My next lever will be an 1895 45-70 just because I hate my shoulder...

although I wouldn't ignore my own advice. a Rossi 92 in 357 at the right price would change my order of acquisition

My 45/70 makes an "impression " on my shoulder as well. Actually, once it made a bruise that matched the imprint of the recoil pad. Lasted about 3 days. After 20 shots.

I enjoy shooting my Henry 45/70 but can't say I enjoy feeding it.

A Henry Golden Boy 22 was my first lever gun.  I liked it enough to add a few more calibers.  Made in America, well built, dependable.

I have Henry rifles in .357, .44 and 45/70.  My .22 Henry sees more range time due to ammo costs.

For all you .45-70 shooters, you might notice that mine has a butt cover on it. 

John Browning may have been a genius, but putting a curved steel butt plate on his big bore 1886 wasn't a smart move. 

The rifle is rated for Level II loads. But I keep my reloads at Level I for a good reason.

Now may not be the best time to buy a lever action rifle or anything else but it may get worse before it gets better.

Thanks to Hipower, I am now the proud owner of a Henry Classic 22LR lever action rifle. Can’t wait to get it out and do some plinking.

I remember my first...1911 that is. A Colt Officers Model. Like the first hit on a doobie...just can't stop!
