On-Board Extra Mag

Being older than dirt, I was once issued an M-2 carbine in 1961 in the Army in Germany and we had mag pouches that fit the off side of the buttstock. These same pouches were modified to fit the buttstocks of police pumpguns and carried extra shotgun shells later in the 60's. So I've always liked the idea of having an extra mag aboard any time I pick up my rifle, and was glad to see the following models on an equipment website.

The first pouch contains one 20 or 30 round mag and fits a standard fixed stock on the AR, and will fit other guns. I've found that if you keep the pouch rotated toward the bottom of the stock there is no conflict with the strapping when aiming the gun. Here's the fixed stock model:

This photo shows the sling attached to the top ring that is a part of the pouch, but I use the standard M-1, M-14 sling attached to the standard swivels on the underside of the rifle and it works fine. The ring doesn't get in your way if you don't use it.

The next photo shows the model for collapsible stocks. A buddy has one but hasn't installed it yet. I can't report on how it works because I have no collapsible stocks, but it looks like it will work OK.

The source of these pouches is DSA Inc., at http://www.dsarms.com/default.asp Both models cost $26.95 each and come in a choice of Black or Green. The one I bought is very well made and durable as heck. This company has all kinds of accessories and gear for different military rifles and was easy to work with.

I kept one on my M4 while in Iraq, however it was mounted horizontally. I liked the fact that I always had one more magazine.
