The National Rifle Association announced it has canceled its annual meeting planned for Houston next weekend because of rising COVID-19 cases in Houston.

“We make this difficult decision after analyzing relevant data regarding COVID-19 in Harris County, Texas,” the NRA said in a statement on its website. “We also consulted with medical professionals, local officials, major sponsors and exhibitors, and many NRA members before arriving at this decision.”

The meeting was scheduled to be at the George R. Brown Convention Center from Sept. 3 to Sept 5 to mark the group’s 150th year.

The NRA annual meeting typically brings in tens of thousands of attendees from across the nation. In 2019, Dallas officials estimated the convention there brought in over $40 million in spending to the local economy through hotel bookings and other tourism related spending. More than 70,000 people were estimated to have attended the meetings.

It’s another blow to Houston’s convention business that is seeing cancellations climb. Amazon Web Services, Inc., canceled an in-person conference that was set to begin on Monday and an in-person Texas Realtors Conference planned for the George R. Brown Convention Center on Sept. 9. has also been scrubbed.

“Despite our desire to gather for our annual conference, the capacity to meet emergency needs of visitors is severely impaired, thereby placing attendees at substantial risk,” the real estate group posted on its website.

Knew several members who were going with no other intentions than booing LaPierre off the stage. Now that won't happen, sadly.

For those whom have never been, the NRA convention is a way cool event. Many vendors sell at these, often with serious discounts. Optics are often good buys at these.

One can also meet big wigs like Les Baer in person, among others.
