HD shotgun..round in chamber or no?

As many have said..."cruiser ready" is by far recommended by the leading shotgun instructors.  Shotguns are not drop safe like most modern pistols.  Full magazine, trigger tripped so that slide is unlocked, safety off.  A quick rack of the slide and fully ready to deliver rounds down range.  Big advantage of shotgun is generally only one serving per bad guy is sufficient.

Full tube, chamber loaded, safety on. On the assumption I get woken up at 3:00 AM I may not be in my most alert frame of mind and I also don't want to make any additional noise. Remember, the criminal has the drop on you and in most any home invasion you are WAY behind the 8-ball.

Having said that, the shotgun is not the first thing I'm going for. I feel much more capable with a high capacity full sized hand gun with a weapon light. Even better than that would be a 9mm sub-gun on some kind with a short barrel.

For my defensive shotgun being familiar with and enjoying AK47s, I went with the Saiga-12 about 17 years ago. Simple, easy to maintain, shoots any 12 ga. ammo and works like an AK. At fifty yards, slugs hit COM reliably with the iron sights.

It could be tricked out I suppose, but I see no need to do so. I'm not a camo tactical guy, just someone who's seen what a 12 gauge can do in the right hands.

I don't think the Saiga -12 is available anymore. I see there are some other AK types, but I have no experience with them. Since no one is getting into my home without my knowledge, I keep the 5-shot mag in, empty chamber. Easy to rack in the dark. Extra mags at hand.
