Wolf Ammo Rules!!!

well... actually it doesn't really rule.

this posting is aimed at making the point that when (or if) you're shooting Wolf ammo, i'd recommend you pay a little extra attention and use a bit more caution than usual.

let's face it, the stuff is cheap, and well known to be quite problematic w/ many many guns, and also very dirty...

that said, when it actually goes off, it's fairly accurate practice ammo, and easily will save you $50 per case (9mm), so a lot of people end up shooting it (although not myself until very recently).

a couple of weeks ago i bought a case (20 boxes/1000rds) to test out just how reliable my steyr m9-a1 actually is... seems many consider wolf the "acid test" as far as ammo goes, and if a gun will eat through a bunch of wolf without many hiccups, it's safe to say you can put your trust in the thing to perform when needed while loaded with "real" stuff.

500rds, or half way through the case, i'm happy to say my steyr has performed like a champ, no gun related issues whatsoever (and i have not cleaned it during this period either), no ftf's, no fte's, no nothing (puts the round count on the gun somwhere just shy of 5000 from new w/o a single issue at all... not bad i'd say).

HOWEVER, the ammo is way suspect!

i've experienced 1-3 "dud" rounds per box of 50... even for cheap stuff, that's pretty poor.

more alarmingly, a week ago i had a "soft ignition" and ended up wacking a stuck bullet out of the barrel w/ a brass dowel... had i ignored it and chambered another round and fired, THE GUN WOULD HAVE GONE KA-BOOM!

well... it happend AGAIN!

below are a few pics of the last 100 rds i put through the gun the other day. i don't know if i got a bad batch or what... but what i can say is:

HERE IS PROOF THAT IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE SHOOTING A BUNCH OF WOLF YOU BETTER USE EXTREME CAUTION! ...OR ELSE!

all shots are from off-hand standing at 10yds, so you can see it's relitivly accurate when it works like it should, but strange deveatin shots or flyers sometimes happen while aiming exactly the same as a shot that was dead on. will i shoot the rest? hell yeah. who's going to buy the rest of the rounds off me after this post anyhow? and i want to see if the best $350 pistol out there is up to the task....

USE CAUTION!

(bullet after i got it out... for the second time. notice the "healthy" primer strikes on "duds")

interesting! My experience has been different. While i buy wolf because it is cheap, for multiple firearms i own. i dont think ive experienced a single dud from them with over 1k rounds used in different firearms. granted, i dont think i tested for flyers as closely as you did. But nothing has jumped out at me as odd.

who knows? i might have gotten the worst batch ever...

i didn't really test for flyers so much as i just noticed hits to the left and all over the target right after shots that were hitting my relative "center" (the hole that's a bit low and left).

i haven't put that many shots left in a long long time, it was driving me a little crazy... although most of the shooting left is just me sucking.

the headshots are the last 5, the accuracy isn't really the problem though... the 2nd stuck bullet is.

Yeah, I won't shoot Wolf myself.

For steel cased, Russian training ammo, I like Brown Bear. Zero issues so far.

I also shoot S&B's steel cased stuff (when I can find it) with zero problems as well.

I've never had a problem with Wolf accuracy or reliability wise but my 1911 does not like those lacquered at all. Once everything get warmed up cases start sticking.

i shot a box of wolf 9mm yesterday

smoky and dirty. i dont think i will use it again...

ive had better results with that Blazer cheap ammo from Wally world for at the range... but im starting to think.. a few extra bucks to keep my guns in good order is probably worth it in the long run

I don't like the idea of that lacquer melting off the casings and setting up in my guns. No thank you, you can keep the stuff.

I never had a problem with Wolf in 9mm, .223, or 7.62x39 (AK-imagine that:D).I have had problems with S&B. The two boxes I used had multiple problems.

Isn't Wolf, Brown Bear, Monarch (blue box) all made by Barnaul?

Its pretty hard to find wolf with the lacquer coating anymore, it all polymer coated. According to some studies done on AR15.com, the lacquer coating wasn't really responsible for the stuck cases, it was due to the fact the steel casing doesn't expand as easily as brass and seal the chamber. Soot blows by and causes carbon to build up in the chamber and make cases stick. I've never had any problems with wolf in any gun, but was less than impressed with accuracy. Barnaul is definitely better quality. They also have multiple coating types (brass and zinc plated steel) for those that want a little more protection for their chambers.

I should say that most of my negative Wolf experiences have been with Tula/black box stuff or any of their .223.

well, all i can say is if anyone out there wants to trade me 400rds of 9mm brass for my remaining 500rds of wolf i'm game...

Ive shot wolf in everything I own for practice and never had a problem. I will say I wouldnt use it in "cheap" guns, steel case has a habit of eating extractors. If you clean your guns after every use ,whats the diff. how dirty they are.:)

:)

If I take your carbine course, I would be interested to see how much Wolf I could shoot before any problems occur. With a quick cleaning during lunch, and good one at the end of the day, I would like to see how the Wolf would perform. I'd still like to put the Wolf through it's paces (especially with the price of ammo these days). I have a couple thousand rounds of Wolf MC waiting.

Of course, I'd bring a supply of brass cased ammo as backup. :)

Judging from the last class it won't take long. Buy some good ammo or you'll waste most of your time cleaning and practicing malfunction drills. Or just buy an AK and don't clean it for the whole 2 days and get to shoot alot.:)

Except for the weight of the bastard (course stripped down it compares to a "tacti-cool'd" AR) thats probably good advice. :D

Thats the best part.....You get a workout and it doubles as a club if you run out of ammo.:D

100 more rounds (well, actually 93...).

shot 2 more boxes yesterday... 5 more "duds/squibs", AND 2 more stuck bullets....

worst batch of ammo ever... i'm highly spooked, think when this case is gone, i may never shoot wolf again.

on a positive note, the gun is yet to do any wrong.

Just not a good idea in an AR. I learned the hard way too when I tried to shoot some in a Mini-14.
