Need Shotgun Info

A few weeks ago I ran across an Estate Auction in Blaine which stated they had some guns for sale. As a charter member of CGN ( Certifiable Gun Nuts ) I felt it was my duty to make an appearance., Once my Garmin finally quit playing games and I found the place, I looked their wares over and decided it was a lost cause. As I turned to walk away, the gentleman called me back, saying he had a shotgun I might be interested in. When he returned to the room I recognized the humpback shape of an old Browning and began to drool. Upon closer examination, I determined this was a 16 ga Savage on a Browning frame. We were able to agree on a price so I am the proud owner of what I think is a model 720, full choke semi auto. My brother and I fired the gun this afternoon and our jaws dropped at the pattern. Anyone have any ideas on the value ? Just curious, I think I may hang on to it and see how it performs at the Turkey Shoots next fall

Regards

Max

From Blue Book:

MODEL 720 AUTOLOADER STANDARD

- 12 or 16 ga., Browning A-5 style semi-auto action, 26-32 in. barrels, various chokes, checkered pistol grip stock. Mfg. 1930-49.

Grading

100% 98% 95% 90% 80% 70% 60%

$225 $180 $165 $155 $140 $120 $110

This seems a little low to me. BB is not always correct. Also, 16 ga's usually command a premium.

Froggy,

That is a really cool shotgun you found. I looked up some info on the Savage trench guns and I do not think he has one. His serial number doesn't match and it is supposed to have ramp sight. I would not consider the front sight a ramp sight, but I could be wrong. After looking the auction and the following info, what do you think it is? If it is not, I wonder is he is purposely misleading people with his ad or it is just a mistake.

Here is what blue book says:

SAVAGE MODEL 720 MILITARY SHOTGUNS

- appears identical to Remington Model 11. This was mfg. by Stevens/Savage in very limited quantities, plain and engraved receivers noted with high quality commercial blue finish. Stocks are unmarked and must have ramp sights to be original. Watch for altered guns made into Riots. Serial range 69,000-90,000.

Grading 100% 98% 95% 90% 80% 70% 60%

Riot Gun N/A $2,500 $1,850 $1,250 $925 $750 $600

Long Barrel N/A $1,000 $800 $750 $500 $350 $300

STEVENS MODEL 620 MILITARY SHOTGUNS

- this was the current model being sold by Stevens and has a commercial blue finish, but not of the same quality as the other companies. Trench guns are equipped with handguards that have a definite purple/reddish color to the front and dark blue vent. shroud. Model 620s are much rarer than 520s and have "U.S." and ordnance bomb on receiver, ordnance bomb on barrel and unmarked stock. Serial range 1,000-30,000.

Grading 100% 98% 95% 90% 80% 70% 60%

Trench Gun N/A $3,500 $2,800 $1,700 $1,200 $800 $600

Riot Gun N/A $900 $750 $450 $400 $350 $250

Long Barrels N/A $500 $400 $250 $200 $175 $150

STEVENS 520-30 MILITARY SHOTGUNS

- this model was resurrected due to available machinery and is the most commonly found Trench gun. Riot guns in mint condition are hard to find. Same finish as Model 620, "U.S." and ordnance bomb on receiver, ordnance bomb on barrel and no proofing on stocks, except for reworks. Trench gun has same style handguard as Model 620. Serial range 30,000-70,000.

Grading 100% 98% 95% 90% 80% 70% 60%

Trench Gun N/A $3,000 $2,000 $1,500 $800 $600 $500

Riot Gun N/A $1,000 $750 $350 $300 $250 $200

Long Barrels N/A $500 $400 $225 $175 $150 $125
