I have to say that I think jackdog is right. You never shoot to maim, hurt, break a fingernail, you shoot an attacker center mass (or as close as you can get). I'm a decent shot and at the nice calm surroundings of a range I can hit whatever I want at a decent distance. But with the stress and adrenalin of being attacked I probably couldn't hit crap. I'm aiming for the biggest part and shooting till he stops attacking me.

I hope to never, ever, be in the situation, but I'm not giving my life to a thug to avoid some two bit attorney.

I'm taking "the class" next week. I'm hoping they will cover this kinda thing. It's FOUR HOURS of classroom time, so i hope so!

When the threat is gone (punk dropping the knife), I would be required to lower my weapon. I'd use my own cell phone to call the police.

The guy has a knife, are you going to draw your gun and gamble he will drop the knife or run? I am not that into getting sliced and diced, if I draw my weapon, He is getting shot numerous times or until I know he is no longer a threat.

Your thinking about your quick draw and shoot. Titansfan draw and shoot is obviously slower, and once the threat is gone there isn't an imminent threat anymore and no need to shoot.

Don't count on it for the most part. The class follows the rules of the state and covers the basics for the most part. There will be some discussion, but not that much. I would suggest you take a street level handgun course, or similar. These courses are designed to help you, the permit holder, understand and train with these different scenarios. You will spend @8 hours learning, thinking and practicing techniques that include, firing, drawing and firing at different positions, stress drills, and shoot no shoot scenarios and many more. You will fire around 500 rounds of ammo. I have taken some classes and wish I could afford more. As soon as I can, I will take more.

Your thinking about your quick draw and shoot. Titansfan draw and shoot is obviously slower, and once the threat is gone there isn't an imminent threat anymore and no need to shoot.

Well actually I was thinking that He had a weapon poised to do me harm. My hand is in my pocket, when my hand comes out of pocket it will contain my BUG. Not really thinking about quick draw at all, that's why I carry a BUG.

Once again if you draw a weapon do not hesitate, use the darn thing.

I would just mention to the would be attacker, that I have been involved in many a kinky affairs and never once thought about introducing a knife. Great idea.

Definitely sounds like a really good idea. I will hopefully be able to do that later this year. I'm sure i'll be posting some questions about those classes later on. Thanks!

I can think of any number of scenarios for drawing a weapon but not using it.

Indeed there are times when DRAWING a weapon but not showing it would be prudent, and there are times when SHOWING it (but not shooting) could save your ass.

Indeed, 3 times in my life, the latter tactic worked for moi.

True...I was thinking in a case(like this) where someone with a weapon tries to attack, rob or threatning your life in any way.

Say the OP's situation happened around the corner from your house(or just in the same city) say at the atm or store and it played out as he stated and you just drew your weapon and didn't shoot...you most likely WILL see him again and this time its not gonna be with a knife, he might just shoot your a$$ then take your stuff, you see/hear about it all the time....I just feel like if someone has a deadly weapon with intent to use it, why wait to see if they will.

Again, my opinion...But It really matters on the situation...And if you CAN get out of the situation without using you weapon your way better off doing so.

A friend told me a story someone he knows told him.

This idiot is in a bar and bikers start picking on him. He pulls his gun to scare them. They take his gun and beat him with it. He winds up in the hospital. The bikers wind up with a good laugh.

But the moral of the story he was telling was apparently, still after being beat with his own gun. Use the gun to scare people if threatened.

There must be a special seat on the short bus for him.

ok, he only has a knife because he is almost as bad ass as Chuck Norris. He uses the knife to distract your attention while he attempts to Billy Jack kick your face with the silly smirk on it. :-\

So you shoot him in the feet to stop the threats from that direction then shoot him center mass once the pin wheel of his spinning limbs stop.

Because a .45 blows limbs clean off! At least thats what the guy behind the gun shop counter told me.

Oh, then shoot his cell phone because its ringing and playing that obnoxious gangsta rap as a ring tone and it poses a threat to your mental state.

If he has a knife and you have managed to draw without being stabbed/cut, why, pray tell, are you wasting time talking?
