So after the thread from the guy on here about the stolen gun & the police getting his ip address I thought maybe he was getting scammed. Well today I got a call from a friend of mine. He has never been on TGO so I'm positive he hadn't heard about it.

He put a Springfield 1911 on there today. He had 4 or 5 calls & 1 guy called a couple times being really persistant wanting the serial numbers. My buddy offered to let the guy see it in person but all he wanted was the number. Well my friend was kinda spooked & just deleted the listing. A couple hours later he gets a call from someone stating they were with Ruthorford county sheriff & wanted to know why he deleted the add & why he wouldn't tell them the serial number of the gun. BTW he bought this gun new.

He shouldn't give out the serial number. He made the right choice. If they want to see it, they should get a WARRANT. As well, they'd better be calling from an official police number, else I'd be giving the REAL police the number to look for.

So does he know it was actually the sherrif's dept? Did he get a call back number and contact or is this just more scam!

If it is the SD, I gotta say it's a pretty cleaver way to get free info on possible stolen guns. That is if they aren't harassing decent folks in the process or "logging" good serial #'s they find.

This is the point where you tell them to go pi$$ up a rope.....Masquerading as an interested buyer is a bit childish to me.

Do we need a new law stating that you can't impersonate a buyer ....I know, apples to oranges!!
