870 break

Recommended Posts

Y'all be sure and inspect your gear often. I bought this shotgun used from a friend about 8 years ago. He took it through Fighting Shotgun at Tactical Response and pretty much put it away. I bought it, test fired it, and put it away. I really got into training the last 4 years and have taken a lot of pistol classes and decided it was time to do some shotgun training. I took this shotgun through Fighting Shotgun this past February and then this week through Mastering the Shotgun at Top Gun in Memphis. In this class is where I noticed the crack. I have already got a new barrel thanks to another TGO member, but still wanted to share.

Never saw one break at that spot but, did see one break where it meets the bottom of barrel.

Yup same here. Breaking at the weld is much more common.

Thats an interesting break for sure. It looks like a crystalline break. If it's a factory screw up, the ring would be harder than it should be. Maybe you can take a good sharp file and see if it makes an easy cut on the edge by the crack. If it just glances off without cutting some metal off, Its a factory defect. The red color tells me its a casting since the lost wax process of casting puts a fine amount of silicone in the casted surface and hence the redish color. The rings are silver soldered on and that takes around 2000 deg to get a good flow between the parts. If the part was cooled too quickly it would exceed its required Rockwell hardness and be on the brittle side. The file trick is a basic indicator if you dont happen to have a Rockwell C testor in your garage... 🙂  Another thing folks do is tighten the cap with plyers. Not a good idea.  I had an 870 as a duty shotgun for 18 years and by the numbers, your "supposed to" all ways test the cap for tight with fingers only at each shift rotation. Too tight a cap and expanding barrel heat can create undue stress on the ring and weld. To bad Rem went belly up..... I would have sent it back to see if you would have gotten a free bee.

Yup only hand tight for me.

I sent the new Remington an email. I wasn't expecting much, but it was worth a try. Their response was exactly what I figured it would be and I totally understand.

Thank you for your understanding and support of Remington firearms, America's oldest gunmaker since 1816.

The Remington brand used to mean quality. That hasn't been the case in several years. I won a 870 express magnum and was shocked to see in the warranty info it only had a 2 years warranty. There are lots of people that bash Hi-point, if you find one in a ditch it is fully under warranty for life. Plus you can call them and within about 4 rings a real American will answer and get you fixed up. Old Remmies good, newer Remmies not so good.
