Got a chance to snag a 16 gauge 1897 pump gun . Just wondering on the scarcity of it and what it would be worth if i was to end up with it?

As always, condition is important when determining value.  There were a lot of variations of these over the years, and it's my understanding there are even some reproductions available.  I would suggest running your inquiry on some of the Winchester forums, and make sure to include pics ...

$100 to $10000.

You'd need to be a bit more specific to get a better price estimate.

A standard 1897 would not be rare by any standard, but is a fine shotgun.

IMO, if you want to actually use the gun regularly, it should only be the far more rare fixed barrel guns. The plentifull take down guns had a BP era weak thread shank take up design and is about the only thing some what carried over into the model 12 series. The hammerless 12 is a clean slate design upgrade over the far more complicated-ly machined 1897. A good condition fixed barrel 97 is good with general "basic" field  loads where as a take down model that is still tight (with thread tightening adjustment still available...Even more rare) should only be used with light AA skeet type loads. Even those with a steady diet can loosen up the barrel threads.  A great many loose as a goose 1897 take downs are floating around and are nothing more than wall hangers. Parts for those are plentiful.
