Snake Shot

Went to Franklin Gun Shop today and purchased 10 rounds of CCI 38/357 Snake Shot with # 4 shot. It cost 19.99 which I thought a little high but livable.  Went on line and what I found, was 10 rounds of the same, but was 79.00 + shipping.  Too rich for my blood.

My crew chiefs used it when we were in the swamps of Ft. Stewart, GA.  We collected a number of poisonous snakes, which we hung on como wire.  We were armed with model 10 S&W.

Before the recent foolishness and WalMart started their pandering to the hysterics that was about $9.97/box.

I like to keep some around.  I noticed in the very beginning of the ammo hoarding that the shotshells disappeared fast, almost like people were preparing for a rodent or snake apocalypse. The components to reload them quickly went out of stock.  Like Garuda said they used to sell for about $10.

45 Colt case, green dot powder, card, shot, and top card, and you have your own home made snake shot.

Frustrating, isn't it?

I think some of the older "how to" threads may have fallen off during some of the transfers and upgrades.

Then again, I may not know how the "search function" works...

I've searched for various handloading and powder coating topics that I'm sure I've read on here since I joined in '09, but alas no luck.

Hopefully someone with better cyberskills than I have can help you.

But I agree with your earlier post in that a person can handload  shot shells, and mine have always had a much tighter pattern than store-bought. I've done it in .44 spl (for an old Charter Arms Bulldog pug) and those peppy little devils shot nicely.

Okay I will share my recipe, NOTE: use at your own risk. I shoot mine out of a Taurus 65, .357.

This can be used in both .38 special and .357 revolvers. I use .357 brass and because there isn't a bullet protruding from end it will cycle in both. Take a dozen or more brass and remove the primers then open up the primer pocket flash hole to about twice as big. This will help prevent primer setback. I use 5.8 gr. Bullseye with 2 wads over powder, about 88 gr. of shot I use #8 because I didn't have #12, 1 wad over shot and either seal with hot glue gun or wax. I make my wads from thin cardboard like the type used in Federal primer packaging, I use my lubrisizer and make up a bunch. This is good for about 10 feet, but make up some and test them as YMMV. I also mark the bases of this brass to keep separate just for this application. You can use 3.5 gr. of Bullseye and substitute uncooked rice for the shot and make bee/hornet loads. They are a hoot!! Yes if there was a rednecks anonymous I would probably be at most meetings!! LOL

Just so happens I'm in the process of welding together a dewat S&W M10 that will sport a 5"  38 S&W barrel with the most of the rifling removed. A 38 S&W runs a 360 groove so it should move shot like eggs threw a hen. I expect a tighter pattern, thus extending my usable range.  When I get it done, I'll do a comparison post of rifled 4" Taurus vs 5" some what smooth bore Smith.  God forbid a federally sees a shotgun smooth bore in a pistol with no title 3 permit. Another fun project from the bench! I'v read about the rice loads before and really like that idea.  My wife got bit in the cheek by a nesting red wasp once...... boy, did she swell up!
