No, but at the same time she would’ve been fine if the call had been a car accident or someone getting shot or robbed or whatever.

 

I’ll be a little bit forgiving because I don’t think any dispatcher is prepared for a call that says “the new bridge is broke and you need to stop traffic before it falls into the river.“

I watched the news a little while ago. They say that beam is 24" X 30".  That's serious load bearing stuff. 

They also say that there are already over 200 barges sitting half a mile upriver waiting for clearance.  News is that clearing river traffic is the first priority.  Unlike a road, a traffic jam on the river doesn't just sit still. Things have a tendency to drift towards each other and don't do well if they meet.

When I'm driving over it, it seems way too small.  I would prefer 24x30 feet ...

I bet it will be like some of those cars I like to watch them restore on TV. It don’t look too bad, but then they start taking it apart and find it’s a nightmare.

I agree, but that guy was also talking so fast I was having a hard time understanding him. He wasn't being very clear.

No one could build a bridge across the Mississippi in a year I assure you.

I expect there will be a manufacturing flaw discovered in that one particular beam, and it will be replaced quickly.

I think it took them about 6 years originally.  Today, with requisite environmental studies and all the other regulatory hassles, it would be a miracle if they could beat their old time, even with modern advances in technology and engineering ...

They built the Hoover dam in 5 years. I don't think they could do it in 15 today. Of course, 112 people died during the construction. We wouldn't allow that today.

Exactly right.  When there's a genuine dire need, and no time to arrange fraudulent bids, bribes for permits, and payoffs for relevant state and municipal officials, things can progress quickly.

Not really comparing apples to apples.  The Mississippi river is much wider at Memphis then it is in Minneapolis.  The Memphis bridge is about 6.5 times the length of the Saint Anthony Falls bridge.
